My drivers window winder mechanism is difficult to wind up, feels slightly 'grindy' so popped the door trim off to investigate with a view of replacing it(when you grab shaft with fingers it has play) and to my surprise the cheese cloth material whatever you call it from the factory is still in place never been pulled off except for one corner? the passenger door was exactly the same when I removed its card awhile back. Who would figure these would still be intact after all these years however the dilemma starts with me because now I am reluctant to pull it off or interfere with it ? My weather strips are original (cactus) and have NOS ones to replace them but to do all this I assume I'll have to unstick the factory cheese cloth? Trying to keep this car unmolested but guessing this can't be done when repairs are required. Also what can be done with the damage to the vinyl around the window winder handle on the door card? is there a method that will look better that this? Don't want aftermarket ones.

And yes car was resprayed in late 70's from Chateau Mauve to Salamanca hence the overspray you can see and yes I know that detracts from 'originality' so why am I worrying, but everything else (boot, enginebay, interior) is original

Hi Mark.  I can't comment on the cheesecloth but I would be surprised if you couldn't get the vinyl repaired. Check out upholstery repairs if you can't find anyone in the auto trade.  Cheers Ron

Yeh I think they might be able to patch it which is not perfect but will be better than it is now.

You can buy calico by the metre ,you may be able to waterproof it by spraying with a waterproofing treatment.

This factory 'calico' has the texture of vinyl on the inside so you could say its a thin upholstery vinyl turned around and glued onto the door. I've decided to peel is upwards so I can get into the door. Anyone have any idea what the white contact adhesive used by GMH to stick this onto the door could be and whether it can still be purchased anywhere?

That white adhesive has always reminded me of a white vinyl floor tile adhesive.

I'll bet thats what it is Dave? GMH would have gone for something cheap for nthis sort of application, so I wonder if they still sell this stuff. I'll make some inquiries

Hi Mark.  Understand that you want to keep as close to original as possible but with the adhesive I would use a mastic type that doesn't set so that you have the ability to access the area again if need be.  Cheers Ron
