Touched on a good point with the 253 LJ.

Shame Holden didn't respond to the 5ltr XU-1 kerfuffle by just saying "fair enough"...we have deleted that model, we have reduced the engine size to only just above the 6 cylinder engine size".

Any V8 LJ would have been a god thing.

oops , meant to say good thing, but it reads ok anyway

Not sure how much benefit a 253 in LJ would have been Col in Series Production. Whilst the small amount of extra weight of the V8 didn’t affect them too much compared to a triple carb 6 (primarily as the engine is shorter) I doubt a 253 would have made much difference. If they’d upped the compression to 9.4 (like HX 4.2) or 9.7 (like HJ 308), fitted a bigger cam and a Quadrajet then they’d have been more effective but still wouldn’t have gone significantly better than an XU1 if at all. We know from the tests at Bathurst at Easter ‘72 that a stock 308 in an XU1 lapped significantly faster than the Series Productiion HDT XU1’s, but at Bathurst that isn’t surprising. Other tracks would have been quite closer. The 253 described above would probably be close to the stock 308 in output, but I very much doubt that the 308 proposed for the LJ was going to be a dead stock HQ 308. My guess is there would be some differences making it closer to a true 250hp rather than the stock HQ 308’s 227hp (240hp advertised). I can’t recall what the Hurricane’s 253 was in power output. From memory it was about 10:1, 4barrel etc. A stock 9.0:1 253 was 175hp (185hp advertised).

That HG has been for sale for a long time, the HT is new I think, but might just be because it’s on Facebook so not as many see it.

Cheers,
