Wondering if anybody can help. I recently did a motor change from a 6 to 8 in a LH torana. For the first few weeks every thing was good. Now every time I try and start car the starter stays locked in, and when I turn the key off, it still keeps turning the motor over. The only way to stop it turning off is to disconnect the battery. I tried disconnecting when running to the move car but when I disconnected the battery the motor then stopped. But the car does not have issues charging the battery while running. Tapping start er or solonoid does not help.
Any ideas or suggestions please

I had the same issue with a starter on a 351C in a ski boat. Needed a new starter. I suggest changing it out with another one if you can borrow one to try.

The solenoid is sticking. Could be weak or broken return spring. Remove starter and overhaul.

The contacts in the solenoid have welded themselves together thus keeping the solenoid energised.

When you reconnect the battery does it start cranking, or do you have to turn the key again?

Same as my boat was. As others have said probably the solenoid, I just got an exchange starter and it fixed it.

What type of starter? Old or new.   I had an aftermarket starter that needed the mount shimmed to give it the needed clearance between the gear and ring gear. If you tried to start it before I shimmed it the starter jammed in.

Dron, will try that, it is a genuine holden starter that has been rebuilt a few years ago. Try a 2mm shim and see how it goes. Pulled it out tonight

You could check at the solenoid terminal for open circuit when key is released. It is possible although unlikely that the circuit remains energised although the key is released.

Check for voltage at solenoid terminal when key is released. If you don’t have a volt meter take off the terminal, then get someone to turn the key. Put terminal on, engine starts. Take off terminal, see what happens. Don’t short terminal to earth though. If it stops cranking then the ignition switch is faulty. If it keeps cranking then the solenoid is sticking. May also be due to miss alignment of drive gear as suggested above. I had a clearance problem when I fitted an aftermarket gear reduction starter once. The drive gear was slightly fouling ring gear causing the ring gear teeth to grind against the end of the drive gear. Not a nice sound. 2mm ally spacer fixed it.

Guys, got the problem sorted, my local electrician remembered a circular put out over ten years ago about this, apparently some origonal starters needed this. He pulled the solonoid of and put a second small return spring in along with the origonal and it is now working fine. We checked the clearances with teeth in mesh position and starter did not need shim on installation. All good now.

So it has two return springs in the starter motor solenoid?

Is this a Holden V8?
