The black rims and statesmen caps don’t do it any favours in the looks department. Maybe if they were sevens at least. HQ single headlight front and guards for me.

I'd have it.  Don't change it and drive it around pretending I was Starsky lol.  Would be fun.  Cheers Ron

I agree but also means a plenum change. HQ dual headlight you mean, like a Belmont/Kingswood/GTS?

Rubbish! HJ GTS grille is magic. Backwards after that. Plain HJ Belmont or Kingswood doesn’t look as good.

There is at least 8 from memory:

Cab chassis.
Cab chassis with appearance package.
Holden (except XU3/XX7 and BO6).
Kingswood and Kingswood SL, Premier and BO6
GTS and XU3/XX7.
Deville
SL/E
Caprice.

Some use the same plastics but are painted differently or used different stainless around it. One cab-chassis grille is painted, the other chrome. I can’t remember if the Kingswood and Premier grilles are painted the same or not.

Backward after HK, although I don’t mind the jet intake HQ/LJ.

I'd have a HJ over a HZ. But they didn't make a HZ Coupe so the point is probably moot. :)

I have to agree, HK GTS was the pinnacle in looks. After HJ and LH they went backwards badly for me in styling on the sports variants. HJ GTS/Sandman and LH SLR still had that old Muscle Car look with the lower blackouts and the black basics with no rubber strips etc. plus subtle stripes. HX-HZ and LX had awful stuff like painted bars, hippy stripes or big letter/numbers down the side, pin stripes, rubber moulds on bars etc. Even lost the fluted guards on Sandman and had painted rally rims on GTS. The only ones that really retained that old school look were A9X's and Sandmans where delete stripes were optioned, primarily as both A9X and Sandman still carried chrome bars and traditional finish rally rims and luckily A9X sedan lost those horrid letters down the sides. At least until just after mid-1978 when the rally rims changed to those alloy rims that were later used as SL/E rims. I guess to me it is a product of being old enough to remember seeing the old sports Holdens and Toranas when they were new, gawking at GTS coupes and HQ Sandmans plus XU1 and LH SLR's as a youngster. Then feeling let down later on with stuff that looked to an early teenager like Scooby Doo vans or Kombis covered in rainbows or flowers. I remember a pair of brothers that lived across the road from my Grandma's, both bought Sandman vans new. The older one bought a white HX with the hippy stripes, the younger one a few years later bought a new Windsor Blue HZ with the delete stripe option, the HZ looked so much cooler to me. I wanted a HQ Sandman when I bought my first car (a HQ van) in 1983, but my Dad didn't want me having a V8 as a first car. Couldn't even find a 6cyl one left, they were all rusted away and gone even after 9 years! I think I've only ever found a handful since, maybe 1 x 173 and 3-4 x 202's.
