I had a conversation recently about the Dick Johnson Falcon ,trying for pole position back in 1983 ,most people know he clipped the wall then ended up in the trees. But I heard somewhere he had a tyre blow out which caused this ,is this right?

No, he clipped a tyre barrier which broke the steering and turned hard right into the trees.

That was one hell of a crash. I remember thinking Dick was dead when I watched it.

Although Dick never remembered it, Brock (who was next on track) stopped and gave Johnson a lift back to the pits.

Yeah, me too.

No window nets etc...would have been pretty easy to loose an arm too.

I was at the circuit in the camping area behind the pits that day.

Was probably having a drink in the tavern watching it all happen.

As it unfolded, there was a deathly silence.

Everyone stopped doing what they were doing and lots held their breath until they saw that Dick was okay.

It was an event I will remember always.

Got my own photos of the car once it was brought back down to the pit area.

I then watched as the TAFE guys did their best to make a new GreensTuff and turn a Commodore into a Motorcraft stickered Bengigo car.

That was an all nighter watched by lots in the pit area.

Cheers

Rob
