Hi everyone.

I have a turbo 350 that allegedly came out of a WB statesman.

Do the numbers indicate anything in particular?

Thanks.

No. Only the ID plate on it might help, but would make little difference to value if GMH or imported later

Only interested in identifying it’s likely origin and specs.

These are the only numbers visible.

No help. Only the little plate on the side will identify if from a Holden or Statesman. The rest is all the same as they all came from a US plant. Not sure how the date codes worked on these. I have two in the shed and there are slight differences in the outer case, not sure of either of their origins either. They were fitted from about 1969 behind a huge array of lower power engines.

No plate to be seen. Where should it be mounted?

Were the WB statesman lock up converter units?

No, that is a TH200-R4.

Neither of mine have a plate either like a Trimatic or TH400. Weird.

This isn’t a lock up unit as no C cast on the front of the case next to the hub. If the WB statesman unit should be a TH 350C then this isn’t a statesman one.

Thanks for having a look.

I like a mystery....

I just had a read that the TH350C has an electrical plug on the LHS. I might look into one of these for my HK if I snot the one I have.

Also just looked in the WB parts catalogue. It says a TH350 model code is “ink stamped” on the side of the converter housing and a date code on the side of the oil pan.

The sample code given in the catalogue is J9M23D. J means GM of Canada. 9 is 1979. M is August (F,G,I,J,L,N,O,Q not used). 23 is the day. D is the shift (day).

You've got me interested now Rexy. I'm expecting 450hp or thereabouts out of my 377 SBC. It'll have bulk torque too being a 3.75" stroke. The TH350 I have is not really good for that much, it is really just a heavier duty rebuild on a standard one with a B&M holeshot 3000 converter and a B&M shift kit. I plan to use it to get the car sorted and Engineered, then I was going to get a new one built to suit with a better converter like a V6 4L60 converter modded.

But after I did some research today a TH350C might be a better option. I found a good case and converter today, the rest of it was scrapped though. So I just have to look for another box for the valve body and internals, but I can look for Pontiac ones too as this case is good. The lockup looks to be verily easily controlled using a vacuum switch and a relay off the brake light circuit so the converter only locks in top gear and high vacuum with brakes off. It just needs a 3000rpm converter built from a 4L60 with the TH350 pump snout on it. The rest of the internals of the box other than the extra bit of valve body for the lockup is the same as a TH350. Will make the car far more tolerable on highway cruising with a 3000 or higher stall and a 3:1 or 3.25:1 rear end.

My original plan was to find one but this box crossed my path at an irresistible price. Should be enough to get everything up and running.

Pity there aren’t any lock up TH 400 boxes, would be great for my HQ.

There are 4SPD TH400 but you need a tranny ECU for it. Pretty sure these are lockup converters. As the late TH400 were called 3L80 once they became a GM Powertrain box (like TH700 became 4L60) the 4spd version was 4L80E as they were all ECU controlled. Normally found in diesel 2500 trucks, the Holden Suburban 2500 had one.

Apparently the TH350C are cheap, the one I got the case from had been wrecked out as they are not really wanted. Case was kept for mockups.

I will probably put a 4l80 in the ute at some stage. Plenty of people have run them without electronics.

Just picked up a whole TH350C today, and learned that I can control the TCC with the Holley Sniper using the N2O output relays. So going to get one built. Will use the TH350 I have with the 283 and then fit the TH350C with the 377.
