Hey guys and girls,

I'm looking for an engine recon/builder for red motors around Adelaide.

I have a 186, it might have a scratched bore and all the pieces have been out of the engine for a while. So I'm hoping someone can have a look it all and either refresh it (bearings, rings), or rebuild it to similar specs (pistons, cam, rods, etc, etc).

Just after a couple of opinions aswell, it's out of a GTR but I'm not sure if I want to keep it as is, or beef it up with triples/more work?

Love you long time

Hi mate,
Sorry can’t point you at a builder as I’m too tight to farm anything out I can have a go at myself. This tends to backfire on me as often as not but I have fun with it.

If your 186 is from a GTR it will be highly valued to a serious restorer, but then I thought GTRs only came with 161, 173 and in the LJs 202. Out of an XU1 maybe? Someone will correct me if I’m wrong.

Anyway my point is if you want to modify, and have a genuine GTR or XU1 block you could sell it to fund mods on a common garden 186 or 202. Just my 2c worth.
Cheers
Clay

You may be right, I'm not sure if it's the original motor, I was just assuming I'll do a little research and try and find an engine number. I am a little wet behind the ears when it comes to torries

Only Torana fitted with a 186 ci engine was the LC GTR XU1. Engine number prefixes for LC XU1 186 are 3100X and CK, anything else eg 186A, 186K, 186P and 186S came from a Holden.

Have a look at my build thread posted in Engine - Street/strip 202 to see TK's work.
