Mechanic currently working on my 1972 LJ 4 door has ran into trouble replacing the rack ends. Existing ones are 14mm thread at the rack but oem replacements, and to our knowledge all torana racks are 20mm.

The rack ends fitted to the car have 14x1.5 female thread on rack side and 9/16 male on tie rod end side.

The rack has no visible markings and is bolted up to the origional mounts with no sign of modifications.

Anyone know what this is about?

What Warrenm said.

OEM LC/LJ steering racks are branded TRW and did not have any metric threads. If it does not have a removable cover plate over the pinion lower bearing it is an aftermarket replacement rack.

Aftermarket rack.

Personally I would throw the repro rack in the scrap and get hold of an original steering rack. I heard or read somewhere that the rack teeth on these repro (chinese?) racks are not heat treated properly and wear prematurely.
