If my memory is correct Holden had an optional 6 cyl heavy duty clutch for the red six usually called a 1 tonner clutch as they were fitted to the Holden 6 one tonners?

Also if my memory is correct, the difference was the diaphragm in the pressure plate was a tad thicker?

Correctish so far?

I have just received a clutch listed as WB 1 tonner that I want to put in the LJ but the box is marked VH-VK Commodore standard.

The question is, did they drop the heavier diaphragm when the went to the bigger diameter clutch?

They had a wider face too on the pressure plate from memory. I’ll have a look at the Engineering Specs tomorrow. I’ll see what I have on the XT5 clutches too.

From memory a HD clutch for a Torana was a standard clutch for a Holden. Then the tonner one was heavier duty again. It was still not good enough though, and during HJ they had to introduce the 4.44 rear axle as a HQ 6cyl tonner’s clutch wasn’t up to moving it fully loaded with the standard 3.55 rear axle. There was even a national competition between dealerships for who could replace a tonner clutch the quickest. I had two paddock basher tonners when I was a kid. A HQ 173 3spd and a HJ 3.3 3spd. The HQ was far harder to move as it was geared too tall with the 3.55, the HJ with its 4.44 was far easier to putt around in, almost impossible to stall it. I realised in later years what was needed was an auto with a welded diff, they went anywhere!

In the 80's,

my clutch and brake shop said to me,

we will put the 1 tonner diaphragm in your red 6 pressure plate,

as it was 7 thousands of an inch thicker,

and boy did that win me races. :3gears:

I always thought the red motor 1 tonner pressure plate had more clamping pressure? and the driven plate had heavier and/or more springs in the hub.

Just had a look. There is no 1-tonner clutch in HQ. May have come later in HQ. There is a heavy duty clutch plate:

HQ pressure plate 7429381.

HQ clutch plate 7434148. Heavy duty 7439027.

HJ has pressure plate 7429381. 1-tonner or heavy duty one is 9939329.

HJ has clutch plate 9939750. There is a heavy duty 4 spring which is 7439027. And an even heavier duty 6 spring which is 9936437, this is listed as the 1-tonner one also.

HX is the same as HJ.

HZ is the same as HJ except they have screwed up the part numbers and descriptions for the HD clutch plates. They list the HD 4 spring plate as 9936437 and also state it is the 1-tonner one, then list the HD 6 spring as 7439027 superceding to M38127.

WB does not list any HD or 1-tonner clutch parts. Only 92005253 pressure plate  and 92005252 clutch plate.

There is no mention of a different clutch or pressure plate in any of the Engineering Technical Specifications for any of HQ-HZ.

Commodore is pressure plate 7429381 for VB and 92005253 for VC-VH. Clutch plate is 9939750 for VB and 92005252 for VC-VH.

The 1 tonner pressure plate had an extra strap and the xu1 clutch plate had red torsional springs

Commodore  92005253 for VC-VH. Clutch plate is 92005252 for VC-VH.

So same same?

The only reason I bought the WB 1 tonner clutch was I was getting a bit of slip till the clutch warmed up in the Grease Slapper (Winton or bust)

The only difference I have found in the new clutch kit and what was in the grease slapper it the thrust bearing which was new when fitted.

All the pressure plate sizes/depths are same/same.

The clutch plate has 6 springs, no rubbers. The springs are British racing green with a red stripe.

I'll use this kit with the old thrust bearing and see how it goes.

Thanks again Byron for your efforts!

Most xu1 spare parts were identified with either red paint or a red sticker the ignition points had red paint on them same as the cam gear I have an early LC xu1 lower control arm with a red sticker on it
