I started looking myself. I found lots online that looked similar but never took it any further.
I remember looking at commodore and even some Imports on eBay.
Good luck at let us know how you go.

Haven’t seen a fan motor for a while but couldn’t you split it, replace bearings as I’d be surprised if it was burnt out?

It shouldnt be a huge drama getting it running again.

Start pulling it apart and give it good washes with penetrene as you go.

Leave it for a day or so to soak.

Newer motors though will give more air especially if you use the modern blades.

You could possibly get an entire heater aircon unit from a Commodore fairly cheaply.

Axistr (Lenny) our power steering guru used the heater and aircon unit out of a Hilux in his big Toranas

Hi Gents,

like Pborg8 i am refurbishing a heater assembly and blower motor.

I have a good commutator and bits & pieces which i am fitting to my blower motor case (as my commutator, brushes etc are junk).

The motor spins freely when i put 12v to it, so is in reasonable shape.

My questions are:

Can or should the commutator be cleaned?

Is there any type of lube that should be used on the shaft when the bearings/bushes are installed?

Cheers,

Luke

Commutator can be skimmed to clean it up, then the insulation between the segments needs to be under cut a little.

Without having one in front of me they generally have brass/bronze bearings.

They are known as self lubricating.

A smear of grease is all I would ever use on one as any excess grease will likely get into the motor, collect crap and then cause issues.

I would likely soak the bearings in oil for a bit then clean them up before reassembly.

Cheers

Rob

Thanks Rob,

i'll follow that advice when i reassemble for the last time. (I have had it apart and back together with various pieces, trying to find

the bits that work the best.)

Is there a trick to getting the bearing retainer/support out of the base, as i cant seem to get the base bearing back into the retainer.

I think i need to put the bearing in, then fit the retainer.

Any ideas?

Cheers Luke

Any pics you can show me so I can get an idea?

Havent played with one for a long time, so memory cant be relied upon for specific ideas.

Ive got an LX one floating around somewhere. It should be similar but would have to find it then pull it apart.

Pics would make it easier.

Cheers

Rob

How did you get the bronze bearing out without removing the retainer? From memory the motor casing is staked in three? places to prevent the bearing retainer from dislodging. I tried to get one out once and gave up for fear that I would wreck the retainer.

The bearing came out of the retainer quite easily when i separated the two halves of the motor as it was seized on the commutator shaft.

The bearing retainer flexes it's 6 retaining tabs one way (to get the bearing out) but not the other way to refit the bearing.

There are 4 lugs (about 2x2mm in size) keeping the retainer in place. I started grinding two of the lugs with a die grinder, but also was worried about destroying the retainer so didn't go too hard.

(I might just need to harden up, and have a real go at it!)

In one of my bases where the retainer is rusted and broken, i can fit the bearing in when i joint the motor back together but it obviously doesn't holden the bearing in the centre, so the motor is noisey when turned on.

I am trying to load some photos, fingers crossed

Cheers,

Luke

Turn the bearing 90 degrees from the way it should sit and it should press in without much drama.

Then rotate it to where it needs to be.

From memory they were considered to be self centreing.

Cheers

Thanks Rob, Easy when you know how!!

It took me about 2 minutes once i rotated the bearing. The motor is back together, and it runs nicely without the racket.

One more job ticked off, Much appreciated input from the forum, Cheers, Luke :D
