Hi all,
I've read a number of posts on the subject but simply can't work out which is the correct booster part number for an early, 9/76 build Torana with a V8.

I recently bought a 4 door Torana project that I need to reassemble and there was lots of stuff missing including a booster so really don't know what I'm chasing.

The car was originally a 6 cylinder and I'm putting a 308 in it.

Any info on the correct V8 brake booster would be great.

Thank you....

I was only looking at this today as I saw an apparent “matching numbers“ LX SL/R 5000 on fb with a single diaphragm booster.....?

Does an LH early lx look the same ? Or have a number? I believe they have a hooked end where it bolts to the pedal? I have a 6/76 hatch and am also looking for one haha. If anyone can help with another one? 🤪😬 cheers

VH329 or VH330 are the two straigh rod LH style. VH327 has the single end, VH330 has the double end that goes on both sides of the pedal. VH345 is the bent rod LX style. There may be overlap each way, not sure when the ADR changed.

I sold one of these about a year ago on Ebay, ended up about $300 or so without much interest, started at $1 IIRC.

But you can get one built too. Look for one of the following and rebuild it using the front and rear rods off a 6cyl or 4cyl ones with the rear rod to suit your pedal. One of these:

VH300, VH304 or VH305 (early HK).

VH306, VH308 (? maybe Bedford)

VH311 (late HK, HT).

VH312 (HT/HG).

VH313 (Rambler Rebel, Matador)

VH314, VH315 (??)

VH316

VH317 (Little Torana)

VH320 (HT, HG)

VH321, VH322 (??)

VH324 (Little Torana)

VH331, VH332 (IHC ACCO-410)

VH333, VH334 (Ford FG Truck 250/300 series).

Some have different sized holes for the vacuum valve. The bodies and the studs at the back are the same though. You should be able to find one of the above at an older wreckers somewhere.

I have one like the picture from Neil however it has been modified and has a VN front so it suits the VN master cylinder for 4 wheel discs, I guess it would not work with drums.

I can find a picture if it helps

Cheers, Tom

Do hyrdoboost do reproduction ?
Great info yel327, will the vn master cylinder change much of the set up? At this stage I’m running wb aluminium callipers and drum rear but could run disc rear?

Harrop sell a bolt on adapter to use a VT/VX/V2 master cyl which is what I bought to fit to the HT-HG booster. I'm using these stepped bore VT cylinders due to the use of the AUII calipers and using HQ-WB rear drums. I think to fit the earlier Commodore cylinders you just need to change the front of the booster to a later UC or VB-VK front as part of the rebuild.

Terry does lots of stuff outright. Given the drug dealer prices people want for old rooted stuff that you have to get recoed anyway you might as well deal direct with someone like him.

I got $480 for a rooted dual diaphragm torana booster a few years ago because it had the right number stamped on the can. Good thing I never throw stuff out. The shed junk pile grows in value day by day....

Hi All,
Been away from my post for a day and there's been heaps of action. Thanks!!

Hi Hatchback13,

I live in Sydney and sounds like the same brake set up you have now is what I will run. Have a set of ali HX calipers and want to run HQ drum rears.

Don't have a booster cause I bought my car in bits.

Hi Rexy,

I will ring Terry and hopefully he can help.

Hi Yel327,
I did have a spare HK booster so will look for it - heaps of junk everywhere - and if I have it, I may be able to do as you suggest and change them around. Thanks, that's great.

Hi NeglectedTorana,

If you have a pic, could you please send it to me. Would really appreciate having a look and if it suits my needs, I'm interested in it. Thanks....

Hi TSN007,

I have bought a LX sedan to build a replica SLR 5000. Will be a long slow build.

Thanks all, much appreciated.

This is what I have, I had it on a 1977 LX but it was wrong and I swapped for a bent rod booster

This has the VN Commodore front so suits that master cylinder which I think only works with 4 wheel discs

Maybe someone else can confirm it would fit but also depends on you having rear discs

Cheers, Tom

Disc and drum master is the same

Don't get scared off by that

Falcon and Commodore used the same units for either (though different units for brand)

Only WB got weird because of the different body styles (rear weight) and load valve fitted to commercials

So the one you have neglectedtorana is for a lh early lx if I’m right? And the bent rod is lx, when can you tell it changed? Mid year? And are you selling the booster? I wouldn’t want to jump ahead of hnsgeq I’m just wondering.
Sounds like hydro boost is a good option also, may have to enquire I think. Cheers.

Thanks neglectedtorana.

Pls let me know what you want for it and we'll go from there?

I have an old cast iron big nut 1 inch master cylinder I was planning to use on the Torana so need to work out whether i ditch the cast iron master or get the front of the booster changed.

Hi Hatchback13,

Thanks for not jumping in. Much appreciated!!

Hey Yel327, I agree. Crazy prices for stuff we all threw out 25 years ago......

Hi dattoman,

I always thought master cylinders for cars with drum rear end ran a check valve in the rear whereas cars with discs didn't?

I know that's what early Holdens, HK, HT, HG were like.

Thinking about it, probably no need for it in later cars with a separate proportioning valve?

Thanks again all, much appreciated.

George

Old style masters did have a brass nut with a duckbill valve under it

However

The ADR style master with plastic bottles didn't - nor most things after

Nor did most aussie fords... pretty much after XT they never bothered

And the same master was used on cats with discs as drums... from XB on basically

Sorry, I don't know when things changed. The info above from  yel327 is the best list I have seen

HNSGEQ

Everything is for sale, keep thinking I should empty the shed my wife hates. If $200 sounded reasonable that would do me.

It was reconditioned by Peter from Auto Brakes in SIlverwater many years ago and when I later worked out I had the wrong one he made me the VN booster with LX push rod I have now.

Cheers, Tom

Hi Dattoman,

Thanks for the clarification  :D

Hi Tom,

$200 is very reasonable! I'm going to have a look through my pile of stuff and see if I have a booster stored somewhere and will let you know if I take it.Thanks.

Cheers,

George

The info I posted is straight from a Patons Brake Replacements (PBR) single and tandem Mastervacs catalogue from the late 70’s, only goes as far as HX and LX. Shows drawings and dimensions of each one. But like anything from that time they do have some minor issues where they try to generalise a bit so you sort of really have to know the cars well to interpret the break points.
