G'day everyone, just wanting  to ask a couple of questions regarding A9X Torana's.

Is it correct that the A9X sedans were factory fitted with the flat style Hella H4 headlights,

but the Hatchbacks were only released with regular style sealed beams ?

ALSO,,,

I've often read about, but never seen or understood how the drivers seats in the A9X were any different from regular SS/SLR Torana's..Were they height adjustable as mentioned in Glasses vehicle identification books from back in the day?

Any answers welcome, Thanks for reading this, Mark

All SS hatches including A9X had the flat style Hella H4 headlights, I have the original set still fitted to mine.

The only sedans to have them were A9X.

No idea on the seats.

Cheers Kev

Still available I think. I put a pair in an old Landcruiser a few years ago.

Hi Kev,

My 4/76 SS has sealed beams. So are they "wrong"?

Cheers,

Liz :)

Ok, so with that comment I will put it out there again,,,,,,,,,,,,,

From years of interest and after owning several Torana's I am suggesting that, as per my original query, the following:

A9X Sedans run the FLAT H4 lights

while,

A9X Hatches used the regular SEALED BEAMS.

i know it sound bizarre but unless someone can say otherwise thats my theory!

So, argue away, a good old debate is always interesting and makes for a change up from regular news and facebook crap!

The RPO code was "TT5" ("QUARTZ HALOGEN HEADLAMPS")

The parts cattle dog says there were three different headlamp part numbers for RHD models, 2823661 for 8UG & 8VB trim levels, 9932805 for all 8UH & 8VC plus 8VD sedans, and then 9942969 for 8VD hatches...

LX-Headlamps.jpg

I would guess the handwritten 9942781 part number would be a GMP&A listing?

The A9X list says almost all A9X sedans had TT5 added, but for some reason there was one A9X sedan (PSN J598279) that didn't get it, but there's something screwy with that record because it has RPO "DL7" ("DELETE STRIPE") and A9X sedans didn't have stripes to delete!

As stated in Norm Darwin's Torana Tough book,

"Quart Halogen head lamps were fitted to the SS, a first for Holden"

Also here's an extract from the official Holden release notes for the A9X Torana dated Sep 12, 1977

"HEADLAMPS

7 inch, round Quartz Halogen headlamps will continue to be fitted to 8VD 77 Models and will be introduced as standard equipment on *VD 69 Models with the introduction of option A9X"

I just looked at my lx sales brochure printed Feb 76 and there is no mention of halogen lights as std or optional equipment. Photo of the SS headlight looks to be flat front halogen however.

Hi Clare,

The other interesting thing I've just discovered is that in the first LX parts manual dated Mar 76, the quartz halogen lights are listed as sealed beam.

There's a hand written note on this manual - STD on 'SS"

In the Jan 77 amended parts catalogue on introduction of Sunbird, there are two halogen lights listed -

Sealed beam unit - Quartz Halogen

and alternately" Lens & reflector assy - Quartz Halogen.

I have the later type, with the removable H4 globe.

So if you have an earlier hatch with sealed beam Halogen lights, they're correct!

I thought the quartz was the glass around the bulb. (stronger than silica). Was the whole glass on the sealed beams quartz?

All the sealed beam halogen lights I've seen use a H4 style quartz globe incorporated into the sealed beam housing.

Here's some pics of a Sylvania sealed beam halogen I have at home.

Anyone out there who has an original Holden sealed beam Halogen light they'd like to share a photo of?

The base of the front bucket seats in LX A9X Torana's are higher than standard. I believe a HX bucket seat base was used.......

Awesome responses from everyone,,, much appreciated!

Its strange that the hatch A9X used a different light to the sedans!!

We will probably never learn why that was?  Cost saving? Who knows..

AND as far as the seat base height goes. Its good to now also know they were different,

BUT I guess we are talking about a model option with over 100 changes from the "standard" usual model it was based on!

As far as I can see he A9X hatch used the same halogen light as the sedans - why do you think they're different?

The two different lights seem to be early fully sealed beam halogen, later type semi sealed beam with removable H4 globe.

Would have been much cheaper to replace a globe than the whole headlight

I believe UC Torana's had the same increased padding in the front seats.
