Just a quick one.

Finalising getting the tank into the HK with a new box sorted for the EFI filter in the boot. Went to order some fittings and EFI hose to connect over to the original HK fuel line, which is 5/16”. Is this big enough for a 425-450hp 385ci EFI engine? Fuel pressure will be regulated to 60psi at the pump.
If not, I’ll get some 3/8” alloy fuel line and bend it up to follow the original line’s path, the inner sill clips I have will take 3/8” line easily. I’ll stop it short of the hole/grommet where the original enters the boot and run rubber out to it. Andy Lee said he can make me up a 3/8” spring to protect the line like the original 5/16” line does where it enters the rear wheel arch region.

Holley Sniper has an AN6 fitting on it.

Main question is, can I buy fittings to go on either end of the 3/8” alloy tube that finish it off in a standard barb fitting so I can attach 3/8” EFI hose? If so what are they called? Or can alloy tube be flared suitable for hose? I have a really nice flaring tool for steel bundy tube for brake lines, not sure if it will do alloy tube. Aeroflow have alloy tube and some olive fittings, not sure if these work on alloy tube?

Your flaring tool should have no problems flaring aluminium tube.

Compatible size brass olive compression fittings work on aluminium tube. Whether or not they are legal on fuel lines I have no idea.

Yes. I got him to do the long brake line (front to rear) for me. The rest is custom stuff so doing that myself.

Calculator says 3/8" ID (or -6AN) line for delivery and 5/16" for return (if used)...

Yep 3/8 feed with line as return will work well.

 

Didn't think alloy tube was allowed thought mongrel to use steel bundy was the go.

Looks like I need 3/8”. I have a 230L/hr pump, no return though. I have got most of it sorted now, just have to work out the vapour line size to the canister. Filler breather and original HK breather that goes over the diff is 1/4”. Canister and MRA breather are 5/16”. It I can find a plastic T with 5/16” on the bottom and right and 1/4” on the left then I’ll run 5/16” forward to the canister which is from a VP V8.

Andy is in Vic. Does lots of repro steel lines. He can’t do a steel 3/8” line as too hard to bend to HK contours, I thought alloy would be easier to work with. Is it not allowed? I can try steel if I have to.

I don’t need a return line, using a VY MRA which regulate at the pump.

Suppose it depends on the engineer...never been 100% when see some engineered cars wonder how the hell they passed.

 

Years ago when consulted engineer efi 304 into lc gtr he said lines must be steel bundy like factory.Other car vh sle has 1/2 lines in steel although it's not in the engineer report just tubs/wheels

I just re-read NCOP9 (Fuel Systems) and it doesn't say anything about alloy lines not being allowed, in fact the only mention of materials to be used is on page 5, which says:

 

The material for fuel lines must be compatible for both the type of fuel and fuel system to be used and must comply with all applicable standards.

 

So you could actually argue that old school steel lines are NOT compatible for Ethanol-based fuels due to the additional corrosion factor.

 

And of course it goes on to say that fuel lines must be secured properly, shielded from heat, etc., but it also says that replacement fuel lines don't need to be certified.

My engineer said not allowed to use alloy tube for fuel,

alloy is not allowed due to being suseptable to work hardening and cracking in a short period 

that comment was made by my engineer which i agree with

All sounds convincing enough for me. Will try bending some 3/8” steel tube. Will have to buy a bender though as mine only does 1/4 and 3/16. The flaring tool does all of them though.
I wonder if I can use alloy for the line to the canister?

I ran my lines in 3/8 steel and whilst I am a backyard amateur, I found it quite hard to bend when trying to be careful and very easy to kink. Hope you have more fun than me.  Cheers Ron

That is what I’ve heard Ron. The HK fuel line is 2 piece with not match to bend in the rear half, but the front half is a bit complicated.

I finally got some 3/8” bundy tune, an Aeroflow tube straightener, bending tool, bending springs plus some slip on coil spring armour for the 3/8” tube.
The tube straightener was expensive but I can use it for the 3/16” and 5/16” tube as well.

Was doing some research on another matter yesterday and found some interesting trivia. For whatever reason I ended up reading about 1969 Z/28. These had a 3/8" fuel line fitted from the assembly plant.

Been wanting to buy gear like that for years...got couple of cars needing new fuel/brake lines so may as well learn to do it myself.
