LC LJ brake hose tension at full lock

Hi all. Nearly finished my project after all this time, being in Covid lockdown has helped have focus time in the garage. One benefit of living through a pandemic :).

I couldn't help notice how much tension there is on my front brake hoses at full lock. Is this normal for a LC/LJ disk brake front end? With or without the spring loaded tensioners attached to the hoses / splash guard the bend in the hose is virtually no different.

I'm running standard LJ calipers and the hoses I purchased are from Rares BH1016 https://www.rarespar...ront-disc-brake

Disclaimer is I have not had a front wheel / end alignment done as yet, so there is a chance I have too much toe out that is putting tension on the hoses.

I have struggled to find any pic's of a standard LC/LJ at full lock, and can't find any past posts with the same issue.

To me it just looks like there is absolutely no slack in the hose at full lock, where I would expect even just a little bit of slack so it's not under such pressure, maybe leading to fatigue.

If anyone can help and advise if this is normal or if I have stuffed something up, it would be greatly appreciated.

I'd be looking at the brackets holding the hoses to the front end first, are they on the correct sides or direction. Are they bent ? See if you can measure the length of your hoses & either check your old 1's length, or ask someone on here their length.

If it were me I'd wind the tie-rods all the way into the tie rod ends and have a look.
If it still looked too short check hose lengths and routing of another car.

Thanks guys for the tips will double check the brackets.  Unfortunately I don’t have any old hoses to measure against but looking at that undercarriage picture in the link, my hoses are no where near as long as those at the straight ahead position.  Does seem strange if the Rares brake hoses are too short, I’m sure they would have sold 100’s.  Always possible I got a dud pair.

if anyone has an original Lc Lj disk brake hose they could measure that would be really helpful.

Toe is easy to set at home, come on now. You can get close enough by eye in any case.

Wouldn’t surprise me if rares supplied the wrong hoses. It pays to know what you are looking at when you get something from them.

I'll bet if you measure your hoses and I measure mine they will be the same length +/- a couple of mm.

From memory my hoses are PBR replacements I bought (and fitted) from REPCO approx 35 years ago.

I use a telescopic tent pole to get it in the "ball park"

Yeah I have the toe set close enough by eye got rack centre and wheels as centre as I could.  What I was referring to is it has not been set at a wheel alignment shop yet so it could be a little out.

I will measure my hoses and see what the come in at.

The core of my question is “is this normal?”.  If someone can full lock their LC/J and see if the brake hose is bent at a hard right angle (wheel pointing out) with very little give like mine.  If it’s normal then I’m worrying about nothing.

my hose measurements are:

Rubber section 28cm

Bolt face to bolt face (installed) 33cm

i’m guessing it’s pretty unlikely my hoses are short.

I haven't measured my hoses yet, however I put mine to full RH lock last night and yes my 35ish year old PBR hose bends at 90 degrees at the caliper end.

Hey thanks for checking Dave, it’s greatly appreciated.  I won’t stress any further!

Wow 35 years, that’s amazing life for a rubber hose in the elements.  I doubt today’s product will last 35 years.

Hasn't been driven very much for the last 20 of those 35. Which makes me think I need to give them a very thorough inspection.

The factory length for LC/LJ front disc hoses is 340mm total end to end.

I know the guy that makes Rares hoses & they are built to exact factory spec.

One thing though, in your photo you not only have it at full lock, but the suspension is also at full droop. That is an extreme situation. Lock to lock is usually at normal suspension ride height.

If you make these hoses longer than spec it will rub on the opposite lock.

I had this same issue when i upgraded from factory hoses to brand new replacement hoses. When i had both hoses next to each other the new hoses were slightly shorter (u didn't take exact measurements at the time) . Seems like the replacement hoses aren't made to the same size at least in my case.

That's interesting.  As my car is a bitsa and I got it as a rolling shell, I didn't have factory LC/J hoses to compare against.  On my first LJ I had changed the front rotors and calipers to LH and had longer hoses (which I still have), but sold off my original disks, calipers and hoses many years ago.  My hoses seem to align to the factory length of 340mm Dr Terry advised.  I measured the fitted length so bolt face to bolt face is 330mm, if I add the little inserts on the end where the brake pipes locate they would be 5mm each bringing it to 340mm.  Looks light a tight right hand kink in the hose at full lock is as the general intended and causes no long-term stress in the hose.
