Hi All, I had a thread for this build here: http://www.gmh-toran...emier-wannabe/  but all the picture links are dead so I thought I better start again and re-link most of the pics.

 

So, way back in 2013 I bought this pile for the princely sum of $700, at the time it was a decent deal for a solid project base, by todays prices it would seem a steal! I was very lucky....

 

Anyway, I'll let the pictures do the talking, I've basically taken each panel back to bare metal and rust repaired / body worked as required.

 

Nose cone is one panel made from 2 banged up ones, Rad support had to have a section replaced

 

Ditched the 202 and sourced a VS SS 5L and made a custom exhaust, modified the loom to fit into the HZ, Ebay shiny radiator, BA Falcon thermo fans.

Got some Weld wheels, Picked up a set of Cloth seats from a Statesman off ebay for $150 - absolute steal! they are almost perfect, there are a few small blemishes which I'm going to get repaired by a trimmer.

Chose a colour I wanted to paint the car and test painted the Engine covers to see how I'd like it. 5 years later and I'm still convinced this is the colour I want.

 

I basically found a paint card in the body supply sho for Holden Carribean Blue, then flicked through the paint cards and found a colour a few shades more towards green.

 

The colour I landed on is a Honda colour from the 90s Civics called Tahitian Green.

You might also spot in some of the previous pics I have moved the Battery tray to the drivers side to accomodate the Commodore wiring, and also Air box placement in the commodore position on the Passenger side.

2 Pack. I've converted my Garage into a Make shift spray booth, I'll put pics of that a bit later.

 

 

So to this point we have only covered up to about 2015, The car sat mosty untouched for about 3 years form this point, I had my HZ Prem Wagon project on the go then I got stuck back into this car.

 

Next on the list I decided to go full frame off and also delete the factory heater, I'll just wire up some electric fan demisters at some stage. I'll also be deleting the vents from the dash and the Dash cluster fascia will be custom with aftermarket gauges, Probably speed hut or Autometer, not sure yet.

 

So in these pics you'll see the firewall being smoothed in plus a few pics of the car being moved into storage

Ok so that brings us up to the last few months.

 

I dragged the car back out of storage and cracked on...

 

repaired the boot, stripped back the underside of the floor and painted in KBS, stripped the doors and sills to bare metal, shaved the drivers door lock, did some bodywork on the doors and more on the rear gaurds.

 

Its basically still at a stage where I'm bodyworking and blocking with course grade paper. I'm very close to having it straight enough to start fine sanding to get smooth enough to lay down colour on the shell.

 

I think I'll get the shell in colour first, then I'll do the fine sanding and final prep on the hanging panels. I feel like doing it in stages and getting colour on something will help the motivation.

one of the pics here you can also see I've rigged up the engine to run on the chassis, I run it once a month or so just to keep it healthy.

 

I also test fitted the Rare spares GTS mirrors.

Here's what I did woth my garage, about 18 months ago I moved in with my now Wife and her house only has a single garage so this is going to be a huge challenge to work in this space, but I'm determined to do a quality job against the odds!

 

So I basically made a panel piece that goes into the door with extraction and some ducting that runs through to front of the Garage. I've only sprayed some primer coats in here so far, it doesn't evacuate very quickly so I just need to work slowly so I don't get too much paint hanging in the air.

Nice job, the reason I asked about the acrylic was I am doing a similar project with my WB van and would really love to get into it with the strip disc but I am restricted with not having a spray booth to apply the Protec Epotec etch primer once I have stripped all the paint off. I notice that you apply grey primer after you strip. Will you wipe all the primer off again with thinners prior to painting ??

Brett, I don't think you need to stress that hard about putting a product on right away. You can leave it bare if you want, and a porous surface primer won't necessarily stop the kind of surface rust you're talking about being concerned about anyway... there are probably other cheap paint products you could use temporarily that are more suitable if you want something you can wipe off later.

 

This is great stuff. Thanks for updating the thread, well overdue. That is a pretty compact working area now!

 

Is the HZ Prem wagon something you've still got? Or has that departed?

Thanks Heath. The bare metal I have done so far I have treated with KBS Rust blast then wiped off to leave that slight zincy look coating so that should be ok I suppose until I can get the van to my workshop.

I covered my car in Epotech 408 in my shed no problem at all. Just use a decent mask with carbon filter as well as particulate and clean prefilter, as well as full skin cover.

Be careful with the amount of spraying that you do with your setup.

It is unlikely to happen, but they do have flameproof electricals on spray booths for a reason.

An explosion in that sized space would destroy a home with ease.

Think of it as one huge cylinder with the right air fuel ratio.

Rob - thanks for the tip I actually hadn't really thought about that. I was going to rig up my air compressor outside the room because of how slowly it evacuated and it'd just be sucking paint fumes back in, now I have another reason to put it outside!

 

Heath - The Wagon was a Project I intended to flip for profit from the outset. As soon as it was registered I advertised it and straight away I had some great interest. It was gone within a week after being complete!

Great work Daniel and I love the colour. That's exactly what I wanted to do with my WB ute.  Separate it and rebuild as you have done, but haven't got around to it and, given I haven't finished the Torana I better focus on that.  Cheers Ron

Oh another thing I don't have photo's of is the Diff and what I've done so far on the brakes.

 

I sourced a 3.55:1 Ratio Ring gear and pinion to suit a 10 bolt out of a 1 tonner.

I also sourced a Statesman LSD which I think had 2.73 gears, The Statesman diff had disks on it but they were knackered and incomplete.

 

I don't really need discs as the car is just going to be a streeter with the mild 5L engine so I chose to retain the original Drums off the Banjo diff that came in the car.

 

I combined my Diff bits to make a 3.55:1 LSD with Drums. I sent it all off to get shimmed up and have the gears machined so they mesh perfectly and have no chance of being noisy. I pulled down the drums and put new slaves and shoes in them and had the drums machined.

 

I also wanted to get rid of the ugly proportion valve in the engine bay so I sourced a Disc/Drum internally proportioned Master Cylinder from a WB Ute. I've combined this with a WB Statesman Booster and put a rebuild kit through the Master, I'm yet to get the Booster reco'd but it's on the "to do" list.

 

Basically I've pieced together a solid combo using GM parts from around the same era. I'm hoping it'll work well and look tidy doing it!

I didn't! I outsourced that bit. Gave all the diff bits I'd collected to the diff guy and he put it all together for me.

 

It was over 5 years ago now so my memory might be wrong about what I had exactly.The 3.55 centre might have already been LSD and he just fitted it into the statesman housing.

 

I do recall that the whole lot all reco'd and assembled only cost me $750! I reckon it'd be worht at least double that?
