Hi guys

I have assembled my stock 308 motor and ready to fire her up.

What is the preferred start up procedure on a fresh 308, crank the motor with plugs out or just fire it up.

I have stuffed vaseline in the oil pump and have filled the oil filter with oil. I am using a monograde oil for the first run in period.

Would appreciate any advice on the start up please

Take the plugs out & crank until you have oil pressure, then fit the plugs & fire it up.

I assume you have cam lube on the cam lobes and lifter bases?

The absolute best way is to use an oil accumulator and have full oil pressure up before the engine cranks at all. But failing that, see above.

how long does it usually take to build up oil pressure by cranking it over? ive just built a stroker and cranked it over today for the first time. i was doing it for approximately 5-10 seconds at a time and still didnt see any pressure on a gauge setup  next to the pressure switch.

does it usually take longer than 5-10 seconds or should i look into it further?

If it’s a dry rebuild then it may take quite some time.

it took more than a minute to see pressure on a mechanical gauge in my 383 after an engine swap that included changing sump and pickup. Was nearly instantaneous in the SBC and BBC when I did the same.
