Hi all,

I have recently joined, I have a LH SLR5000 L31 M21 which has been off the road for a few years.

I did post this info on the New Members Forum as part of my hello post. I'm hoping someone may be able add some additional info to help me identify exactly what I have. It's not the original 308, the details are as follows:

Block Number: 308H(3 digits only) On the drivers side.

Date Code: D7  0

The 7 could be a 1 and there is a space between it and the 0.

The paper work supplied with the car/engine indicates that it is a HDT block? Is there any way of proving this? It's easy to say it is, but is there any way of proving it?

Cheers

Gaz

Looks like a restamp to me. Has to be at least 4 digits after the 308H. The date code is 7th April 1970 which will be probably be 5 digits after 308H.
It will simply be an everyday HT 308 engine, most likely from a Brougham and least likely from a HT V8 Belmont wagon (which is co-incidently the rarest production Holden). And it has been decked and restamped if it is 308Hxxx

I should have asked also, what paperwork/info was supplied to you that indicated it had anything to do with HDT? HDT didn’t have much to do with 308’s until closer to 1974. Sure Harry was playing around with a HG V8 GTS with 308 as a possible 1971 race car after the LC failed at Bathurst in 1970. And he was playing with a 308 in various LC and LJ a few years later. However those would have been normal production blocks.

Maybe off track a little Byron but wouldn’t the single Hydramatic EK utility be the rarest production Holden? I don’t have the proof of its production. I read it in an old post regarding production numbers on the FB EK forum a few years ago.

EK Production Numbers

Apparently taken from the Holden production schedule dated 19th December 1962.

Lots of EK utes made Clay, but there were only 19 x HT V8 Belmont wagons, which will include 253 manual and auto, 307 auto and 308 manual and auto.

There are lots of single build cars, like one HQ V8 Monaro with an L30 engine (350), one HQ V8 Statesman with L31, M21. But they aren’t alone with their model codes, lots of other 80437 and 81669. But only 19 x HT 80235.

Point taken on the model code. The ek had different floor pressings for manual and auto. The shell is totally unique. Body plate would have been the only one stamped EK2106 - xxxxM and auto trans designation. The different plants had different methods for designating auto on the body plate and most ute bodies seem to have come from the bend. Not as sexy as a v8 of course 8)

The model code was EK2106 though, it just had an optional transmission. The same would have occurred with a HT80235 model, if it was optioned with a 4spd transmission the body is different to if it was a 253 3spd, it has a different floor pressing and shifter mount for the Saginaw transmission and the firewall differs for the left side speedo cable. Body was also different again if it was a 308 manual as the rear floor was a different pressing to accommodate the salisbury rear axle. And different again if it was 253 or 307 or 308 auto as these all used a left side speedo cable too.

The way the model coding was displayed did change on the body plate in HT as well, depending upon which body plant built the body and also when it was assembled. An Australian delivered HT (other than van) could have had a body made at one of Woodville, Elizabeth, Pagewood, Acacia Ridge or Dandenong. EK would have been Woodville, Pagewood or Dandenong IIRC.

Thanks Byron. I wouldn't mind one of each. Gee we are a fair way off the original thread now. Apology to the OP.

I don't know if you'd want a HT V8 Belmont wagon! A HT V8 Premier or even Kingswood wagon especially a 308 4spd or Powerglide or a 307 Powerglide would be the go. Low build number doesn't necessarily mean desirable! People didn't want them back then, hence the low build numbers. It is why 6cyl HQ Statesman were so low build numbers, and GMH stopped building them, only built to order. Same with HX Sandman, they only built one of you ordered, they weren't built for stock order as no-one wanted one. And those that were built, they were either wrecked for parts or converted to V8.

Hopefully the OP doesn't mind! It keeps the thread near the top anyway!
