Just happened to spot a hatchback cruising round today and I’ve got a really bad habit of remembering number plates. Did a rego check on it and it says it’s a 1978. DLX061695M. Gee that’s late in the piece when did UC arrive? March?

UC was released to the press on 15th March 1978 & was on sale at dealerships on 20th March 1978.

They were still building plenty of LX Toranas in Jan 1978 but by Feb they started to build UCs, Very few LXs were built in Feb 1978.

I believe that DLX versions were built in Feb.

That is certainly a weird bit of behaviour.

I would have thought that the chances of someone doing that to me driving my own car were nil. Apparently not.

Yeah since I got booked driving an unregistered vehicle by mistake. I’ve gotten into a habit of checking others rego status. I might be able to warn them before they too get booked. Mine went from a $900 fine and ended with a court case with a defence barrister flown up from Brisbane to defend the DTMR and I ended up with a $2500 fine after my loss.

It is a good way to collect numbers.

In Vic rego check you get VIN and engine number....

Ive been caught a few times.

That sounds bad, but things do happen.

2 of them I took on the chin, and the cops were good about it.

One of them I appealed, saying I was on my way to get repair work done for the rego.

After 12 months or so, I got off that one.

My brother had an exhaust shop at the time and I told them I was taking it there to be fixed, then on to a pink slip and rego.

The cops, 2 HWP cars, that pulled me over werent very nice that day.

But in the end, I got the car regoed the next day as planned, and the prosecution called the case off about 3 days before it was set to be heard.

If you do get caught, explain to them that you were taking it for repairs.

There is a bit of a loophole that you might be able to get through.

In NSW it didnt actual say that you had to have a rejection slip before driving it for repairs.

It did say that you had to have a booking for a rego check though if driving it out of rego and heading to the inspection.

Cheers

Rob
