Hello All.

I am trying to tap into the brains trust and have a query in relation to timing on a marinized 202. These are the apparent timing marks on the flywheel shroud and a mark on flywheel lines up when checking timing. So I have only recently come into possession of this ski boat and just to dot my I's and cross the T's I checked the timing (at idle). Only issue is I am not 100% sure on which mark is TDC. On the setting it came at it runs rough and sounds cool and like it has a big cam. Turn the distributor to advance timing the engine runs smoother and idle picks up heaps. I guess my question is can anyone confirm which timing mark is TDC, is the crows foot mark?

I checked engine numbers and found engine to be a 202 black motor with 12 port head, electronic distributor and a Holley 350, I was initially concerned about the 202 not having enough power but was pleasantly surprised. Has plenty of go for a family ski boat. I have done sea trials with the timing advanced to the bottom mark and it definately tended to rev higher at WOT. So I would love to just confirm the marks! I am not mechanically challenged as in the past I was a fitter and turner and marine fitter. So I have half a clue, just nit specifically on the 202! And yes, I am a Holden man!

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

No engine number will tell you it had a Holley. It’s either varajet or efi. Varajet had crank trigger so you can’t adjust timing by rotating the distributor. Must be an efi motor from what you say.

You seem to be on the right track. Just keep advancing slightly until it pinks under load, then retardant until it stops. Being electronic ignition you should never need to touch it again unless you change fuel octane.

Thanks Clay, didn't figure out holley from engine number that was from identifying the carby itself, has Holley written on it and comparing to many pictures etc. Yes it is a injected motor from a VK commodore but due to being marinized has marine manifold and Carby instead of injection. Yeah I think I may have to do some load testing and advance to pinging like you suggest. Pinging will sound obvious with the motor being only a few cm from my head when underway!!!

To get a rough idea you could poke some soft wire down number one plug hole while turning over by hand to feel when it is at TDC.

Stick a dowel down the plug hole for #1. Bring it up so that the piston touches the dowel and mark it, then run it backwards until it touches again and mark it. Exactly between the two marks is TDC, which will probably line up with one of the existing marks.

I have confirmed the TDC on the marine 202.

TDC was as expected and the line under it is 8 degrees. I am guessing the idle timing will be set in vicinity of 8 - 10 degrees.

Thanks for you suggestions.
