I Have a November 1970 LC sedan with a ghastly aftermarket steering wheel.

What other Holden models would have a steering wheel that fits, would it be only HK HT HG.

Looking for a black steering wheel.

Cheers

Nick

HK/T/G or LC Torana is what you will need to look for. Getting an original black standard steering wheel may be a difficult ask.

There are some available on ebay and Gumtree at the moment but none are black and all look to be well worn.

From what I can see they all appear to be black underneath the factory colour.

Another option is the Repro LC GTR steering wheel from Rare Spares.

Perhaps look for a better alternative after market wheel.

My personal favourite back in the day was from Formuling.

I transferred it across a number of cars in the 70s to 90s.

Needed restitching a couple of times, and the colour was worn from the leather.

But I liked the feel of it and so it moved between cars.

Threw out a few boss kits when I finally let it go.

Cheers

Rob

Pretty sure the factory wheels are just painted. Anyway that is what everyone does when restoring them. I just did one for my FB in jet black urethane 2k, after chasing and filling the cracks at the obvious flex points. For obvious reasons you are best using something flexible when filling. I’m impatient, impulsive and lazy, so just used fine finish filler on mine.

I’d just buy the replica GTS wheel, either the HK or HT/HG depending upon which one you like. GMH used them on GTR. Maybe wait for a 10 or 15% off eBay promotion.

Thanks Jaso, It's pretty rough like my dogs have chewed on it. What do you expect from a wrecker they sell junk for top dollar.

I think you mean the 1970 to 75 Corvette steering wheel.

Firebird steering from that era looks similar to HG/LC, who knows for sure if it fits.

Buick, Olds, Chevrolet all used a very similar wheel. The Part number for the HK GTS wheel is 9748390 and that number appears in many GM parts books but from memory the Pontiac didn't. There is also a Corvette specific wheel that doesn't stack the spokes in the centre where it fits in the hub. The hub itself has a GMH part number 7449076 which means it was made specific for a Holden (and Torana). Some of the parts used have US GM numbers like the 6 x special screws that hold the wheel to the hub 9418712. The HT-HG (black) wheel is identical in fitment to the HK one and uses the same hub but it was made here in Australia by an outside supplier (like most parts) in this case by Bridgestone. So whilst the GM wheel will fit, you will need the Australian hub and horn cap plus its adapter, which you can buy repro:

On the wheels some have flat centres like these:

Whereas the originals have stacked spokes, just pulled a few out in the shed where you can see what I mean:

Thanks very informative, seems like a lot of trouble for not much gain.

Be easier to buy the repro GTR wheel, cost the same by the time you buy the adaptor & everything else.

I have not removed my aftermarket wheel yet, Will I need the factory horn contact ring also ?

Probably yes on the contact ring. Check if the Rares wheel comes with one. Just make sure you get the right one as they differ for different ratio steering, they were originally black for 16.7:1 and white for 20:1 in HK-HG. The difference is where the indicator turn off cam things are.

Here is a black US one:
