As we all know the hinges for the bonnet wear and then the back of the bonnet sick’s up. 
 

ive been picked up by the scrutineers about it. Even though advised that there are no new ones nor other interchangeable from other models.

 

so I’m assuming they are repairable by getting the rivets changed but is there any advice as to where they can be repaired and by whom

Hi, a few years back, i bought a set of oversize hinge pins from a swap meet , and repinned my own hinges. They work like new.

Even swaged them over, the same as they were originally.

So its definitely do-able. DIY

I think from memory the oversize was 9/16 or 14mm.

That was when repros, were not avail.

Same here, got told I needed to sort it for next target scrutineering .  Fortunately they didnt write it in the log book.

Whilst we're on the subject of bonnet hinges. I've seen some original ones that are galvanised and others that have appeared to be originally zinc plated? Is this correct or were they all galvanised. If both finishes were used what/when was the change over?

Hi James, I think they were galvanised originally but no-one does that style of galvanising anymore so zinc is the closest alternative. Todays galv is very thick and chunky and is more suited to steel beams.

Those garbage bin lids made for a good shield in a sword fight with my brothers or neighbors when I was a kid. You don't see that happening any more.

Dad and mum would leave a long neck by the bin at Christmas.

That 'old' galvanising is electroplated onto sheet steel. The other type of galvanising that Marty spoke of is Hot Dip Galvanising. Two very different processes.

The galvanised bonnet hinges, the components were stamped from Galv sheet steel.

Bonnet hinge components were also stamped from zinc plated steel.

The NOS bonnet hinges I bought for my LJ , one was Zinc plated the other was Galvanised so I painted both of them with Silver Epoxy paint.

I have recently used the Resto Country ones. They seem good quality. Price is pretty sharp too.

I have a pair of bonnet hinges (not sure they have the springs with them) off a HK or HG Holden.

Good condition.

Not sure if they are same for LC or LJ or similar.

Anyway, if someone wants them, they are all yours for zero. Pick up Central Coast.
