Hi Guys & Girls

My mate just sent a pic of this breather he just bought at a swapmeet.

It was in a Holden box p/n M38871.

Haven't seen one like this on a Holden that i remember ( killed a few brain cells over time tho)

Anyone have one from factory?

Cheers

Trevor

That’s what I was thinking.
I reckon they just whacked it in a Holden box

M38870,2,3 and 4 are all VH-ish era. Whatever was in the box will be that timeframe. Could have been an oil filler cap of some type though as M38870 was adddd as a part number to replace a VB V8 head.

Edit, I think M38871 was a 4 eared filler cap off 253/308 early on. I’ll look in the parts history and see what it replaced.

Grey motors had a breather tube down the side didn't they, or am I thinking of something else?

Nah greys had one in the middle of the rocker cover similar but with a little horn type attached to it. Not a great description but definitely not grey

I can't find M38871 in any parts history from 1988 to 1992 so it must have still been valid.

I just found this info that Laurie posted 6 years ago:

Actually, while this thread is back here,
my parts book lists two caps for the L34.
3835665 (same as SL/R) optional with 7422035, and
7422035 (same as above option) which in my book has been crossed out and M38871 written in pen, optional with 3835665.
Is there somewhere with part Nos. listed in order with the corresponding description along side it?
3835665 is not an engine assembly or a rocker cover, so I was wondering what it might be.

7422035 is the standard cap used on HK-HG 6cyl except 186S, used elsewhere on earlier HQ 6cyl and 253/308. I think this is the breather type used prior to the sealed crankcase setup (pre-ADR27). HQ 350 early on uses 3980273. All HQ after ADR27 uses 3835665 which is the sealed (non breather type cap).

3835665 is a US part number. It appears for all post ADR27 HQ-WB in parts catalogue plus all LH-LX Torana that aren't 4cyl. If you Google the part number lots of images off slightly different variations in the US, all 2-prong though:

So not sure where M38871 comes into it. It was obviously a part number rationalization at some stage. Even VL V8 still uses 3835665 though and it doesn't appear either in a parts history book.
