Hi, I’m looking at rebuilding a distributor for my LX Hatch and am wondering what is the correct part number for a 1977 LX 308 with pollution heads?

Is it 2807236?
Did the A9X have a different number?
What does the distributor with part number 9938994 suit?

I have searched other posts however they mainly cover LH SLR.

Cheers

It is the Bosch number you are looking for. LX 5.0L with ADR27A lists the same as HX as 9 230 063 825. HZ does change from HX to 9 230 063 835. Most A9X got HZ engines, not sure if they changed to the HZ dizzy or not. It is not listed as a change in the LX Features Manual amendment for A9X though.

That 9 230 063 801 is for HJ Holden and Statesman and also for LH after HJ release and early LX.

9938994 is the ADR27A 5.0L distributor for HX and LX, it will be 9 230 063 825.

I'll see if I have an ADR27A one, would be happy to swap with you as my HJ Premier is missing its proper dizzy, it had a Scorcher on it when I bought it and now has the wrong one.

Only found a HX and a HZ 4.2 dizzy in the shed so far. Will keep looking. All the rest have been early ones of HT-HG so far.

Just out of interest, what are the numbers on those earlier distributors?

One of them that I can get back to easily is 9 230 063 800 is 7434981. Which is HT-HJ, LH and early LX 253/4.2.

I've been goggling what I can on the Bosch part numbers, (with a number something like "9 230 063 800") various sources say:

The first digit is apparently the factory / manufacture location ("0" seems to be Germany, "1" must be somewhere else in Europe, and I'm guessing "9" must be Australia).

The second number "230" (and apparently "231") seems to designate it's a distributor.

The third number specifies the points plate fitted (which determines the points / condensor set used). Holden 6 cylinder red motors are mostly all "062" and red V8's are "063". However I did see a picture of a very early prototype Holden V8 distributor with an "060" points plate in it (unless it was a mis-stamp)? I know the twin-point L34 distributor was custom built by Repco but I'd be interested to know what points plate was used, unless it was custom made too?

And the fourth number is the distributor model (I think). This seems to incorporate things like the type of advance mechanism (vacuum and/or mechanical) as well as the weights fitted.

At first I thought that the first digit in the last group seemed to indicate the number of cam lobes (6 cyl dizzies start with a "6" and V8 dizzies start with an "8") but then I found an electronic dizzy from a 6 cylinder Commodore that started with a "7" so guessing it's just a model number after all?

The body on the L34 dizzy has the same numbers as Brads, with the exception of the sideways 324. Mine is 421.

The points plates are custom made with no numbers.

The numbers in the parts book all match up.

Yours is as it should be Brad. Same as HJ. The one in the second paragraph of the second post.

They’ve all got different 3 digit codes Laurie, makes me think it’s a time/date code of sorts.

The 3 digit codes are date codes.

"421" could possibly be 1st February 1974, which would be about right for an L34 distributor giving Repco time to do their mods.

21 couldn't be a week number as that's too late for L34 production, I guess it may just be a batch number?

Brad's dizzy has "324" stamped on it. Is yours likely to be made in Feb '73. Brad (if it's original)?

Mine is not original. My car had a Mallory twin point in it when I got it. I think I actually bought that dizzy off dattoman.

1st number is the year, second & third number is the month

421 = 1974 January

324 = 1973 April

25 = May

26 = June

27 = July

28 = August

29 = September

30 = October

31 = November

32 = December

The following calendar year the January code resets to 21.

I should have twigged to this before. I was calling 9 230 063 801 (part number 2807236) a HJ distributor. It is actually HT-HJ, LH and early LX 308/5.0L. 800 is 253/4.2 for the same period.

So they are I believe:

9 230 063 800 HT-HJ, LH, early LX 253/4.2

9 230 063 801 HT-HJ, LH, early LX 253/4.2

9 230 063 824 HX, ADR27A LX 4.2

9 230 063 825 HX, ADR27A LX 4.2

9 230 063 834 HZ, VB 4.2 (probably late LX after HX release too)

9 230 063 835 HZ, VB 5.0 (ditto for late LX)

Not sure if there are any others in this period. The Bedford V8's were HEI dizzys.

I was just looking for something else and ran across these pics in the service manual, I never realised how much difference there is between a 253 and a 308...

Until HJ the 308 had the same cam as the 253 but it was retarded about 5deg. They were the same 9:1 compression ratio, but with the same cam the 308 should have had more dynamic compression shouldn’t it? Hence the lower Max advance.
Once HJ 5.0L came out the 5.0L went to 9.7:1 but with a larger cam, but they kept the same dizzy, so the dynamic compression might have been close to the same?
