This radiator cap was bought new from Rares 3 years ago. Check out the severe rust developing on the shaft. The coolant I am using is a strong mixture of the Red Devil recommended Gycol/Coolant with de-mineralised water. What concerns me is that Glycol is supposed to be anti corrosion/anti freeze so why is this cap rusting?? whats happening in my block? Would an excessively strong mixture actually be corrosive???I don't ever recall glycol coolant causing this sort of corrosion. We don't need anti freeze in Qld so why can't you buy an anti corrosion radiator additive that just stops corrosion? Is it the case that this portion of the cap is not being protected by the inhibitor because its not being submerged in it?

I just bought two 500ml bottles of corrosion inhibitor today for my Premier from SCA, along with 5L of Penrite 20W-60 full zinc and oil filter. I had to get him out and running today to get another hoist installed. I changed to this stuff last flush as I ran out of the old Castrol tins that you cannot buy anymore.

30% off store wide until midnight tonight.

Those Castol pop top 250ml anti corrosive concentrate (not anti freeze) that we used to be able to buy in the 80s' was good stuff. I always used 2 tins in my cars back then and no problems. Surely there must be a an anti corrosive specific product??. When this car was in storage for the last 20 or so years it had the same sort of pop top 250ml tins but called soluble oil (turned into milk like when water was added) and it kept this block free of corrosion. Perhaps I should try and source this out again although they say it causes havoc on the rubber hoses.

They took the Castrol stuff off the market as it had Boron in it from memory. This SCA stuff is all I could find easily to do it.

That area of the cap is above the main seal so it only sees coolant when the cap is releasing excess pressure, and is likely to never be fully submerged.

Just clean it up and treat it with some rust converter.

Actually what 76lxhatch is saying is true. This portion of the cap shaft is above the glycol so its probably like ly72bathurst is saying, just poorly made cap.I only bought it cause it looks like the original ones. Should dig out the original cap that was on it when I bought the car it was 25 years old and not a spec of rust on it

Yep 76lxhatch is onto it  Its not in contact with the coolant most of its life but open to atmosphere so quite common especially on a non daily driver.

Not sure of the quality of these rares caps? So far I have purchased three very small insignificant items from these types of suppliers (I make a point of avoiding these purchases as much as I can) and all have been faulty or didn't fit. I can't recall caps rusting like this in any sealed system car I've ever owned in the 80's. Car is driven at least fortnightly. Wonder how hard it is to chase a 'period' 'GM' cap in good nic as they were kicking around everywhere in the earlier years. I'm skeptical of the so called corrosion inhibitors (or any coolant) you buy from domestic car accessory shops these days. They seem to be more obsessed with the environment and never found environmentally safe products any good (compared to yesteryear) and that seems to be all that's available to the general plebs like me. Bring back 'Boron' I say (whatever that is). It seems to me these days, that there are products sold for commercial use only and those for domestic use and there is a huge difference in quality between the two. Anyway if anyone has a 'GM branded 15PSI Holden cap they want to part with I would truly appreciate it.
