Hi Looking to buy a 72 LJ and I am confused by the numbers attached to the car:

Compliance plate next to wiper motor: LJ torana sedan 2 door 02/72 ALJ 01546A

VIN skinny plate LH front of engine bay: 8B11LCH269504J

This suggests it is an LJ S made in 1973 in Brisbane

Model Plate on RH front of engine bay with paint bits that matches the paint code:

LJ82311 with body number 20512B

It is mustard with chestnut vinyl.

An L20 engine with a M20 gearbox.

My confusion is the chassis number located on the RHS of the engine bay reads V841245P? I thought this was supposed to match the 20512B number?

Engine number (not original) XQL 880604

Any help would be appreciated and link to car is here:

V........P is likely a Victorian Police issued number for one reason or another.

The same VIC Police surrogate number sequence was also used for engine numbers.

It means it isn’t a low compression. So a stock 3.3 designed for Super fuel.

VIN plate & compliance plate don't belong to the same car.

Thanks guys walk away at any price? It is an XU1 rep so I know that and I am sure at least 2 tags are original but compared to no ID tags are you suggesting not at any price?

The two Brisbane tags on the rad support do not belong on that body. Looking at the pics there is a lot of paint cracking and crazing which could be a sign of lots of bog and spray putty. Whoever purchases that car might inherit a nightmare.

Thanks guys appreciate the honest responses. I am surprised on the comment re the rad support tags in particular the one on the right. The paint discoloration to me definitely looks like mustard which does match that paint tags color. Unless you are suggesting the both of these have been added and the only correct one is the wiper motor ADR tag?. This would support why a Police chassis number has been added? I spoke to the auctioneer and did say that their ad says 3 tags but I advised they are not matching and inquired about rego papers. The owner is trying to find them and the auctioneer advised the car was purchased 22 years ago by the current owner and has sat largely untouched although the new engine is signs of recent attempts of getting the car going.

Sorry further to this the ad also says "original paint" so the "original" white duco is at odds with the plate that states mustard so does support the notion these tags may have been added if white is original.

The body shell was manufactured in early 1972 so it is impossible for tags from an early 1973 car to belong to it. The yellow paint remnants on the body ID plate aligns with the Mustard paint code stamped in the plate but again I will say the two tags attached to the radiator support panel do not belong on that car.

That car has obviously been repainted, perhaps more than once, so god only knows if the original colour was white, black , red, blue or baby shit brown.

Both front guards have been replaced with the later ADR 10B compliant type and I suspect they are OEM GTR guards not std guards with the vents welded in.

Would make a good base for a race car. No need to worry about Rego then.

Cheers,

Liz

In SA says walk in reg. Just think of it as a bunch of slightly random parts and price accordingly. Would be worth $19750 for the shell maybe?

I guess it depends on how keen you to get a 2 door LJ, it's not getting any easier to find them available. However apart from the wrong tags you could easily spend another $40k plus on that car if you choose to restore it.
