Hello everyone here I'll be detailing the build of my Torana that I'm sure most people won't like. It will at least be a decent source for people to throw a barra into their Torana if all goes well.

So I have a LX sedan currently running it's origonal 202 and column shift 3 speed Auto that's putting it's two hampster wheels worth of power through an open centre banjo diff.
Someday we will be running a preferably turbo fed BARRA, ZF 6 speed and 9 inch diff. The body will be getting some rust removal, repainting and lightening where possible.

Nothing wrong with being different! I know someone who recently bought a really neat XY ute with 351C auto and 9”. He is planning on putting an LS and 6spd auto in it. Apparently you can even buy kits for the conversion.

It’s an Aussie made engine going in an Aussie made car! It could be a lot worse, like a Nissan engine or a Toyota engine or a diesel!

Its got too many doors so go for it mate  :stirpot:  i love my old Holdens but do love some modern turbo grunt too.

Your car your choice.

Though i doubt you will need to lighten it if your going the barra route, just add more boost  :3gears:

But bog removal is always a good idea  :spoton:

You could always do a turbo job on the big block red thats in there for shits & giggles

The Barra is a big engine height and length wise, will be very interesting to see how well it fits... I have a factory dedicated LPG XR6 for my daily, the slowest of all the Barra's at a brain-melting 150 flywheel Killerwasps.

Let me tell you that even though it's the weakest Barra, it still has some poke.

Even a bone stock turbo barra in a sub 1500kg car would be bloody unreal. this thing is definitely going to boogie.

How does the packaging actually work? Have you measured this idea?

I'd have thought it may not actually be possible to put a Barra in a Torana without molesting the whole bonnet to fit it in (which obviously is not the go). Geez they are tall!

But obviously, bulk grunt potential.

Well I've seen someone who already has a NA BARRA in their lx sedan. Should fit, however the bonnet clearance may well be an issue since I don't want to change the bonnet line.

So... update. I've found a Toyota v12 for sale and the temptation of a v12 manual torana is very alluring. Would probably fit easier to.

parts support is something to consider though. easy for the Barra, opposite end of the scale for the v12!!!

Manual 1GZ-FE > Barra. Certainly.
(or at least, manual Barra over auto Barra, lol)

V12 on throttles is always a classically lovable thing.

Well for sale of my own wallet, I think I'll be staying barra and ZF auto. I've also been researching into strengthening the Toranas Body/Chassis. Stitch welding the body seems looks like pre preferable option alongside some pieces welded in to connect sections of the chassis rails that disappear into the body.

I like the column shift Auto and the Auto will shift faster than I ever could.

Column shift is a compelling argument, I can't imagine going to the trouble of fitting a Barra and not going with a real gearbox at the same time though

I wouldn’t even consider a manual! No point unless you are going circuit racing with it.

Nobody ever accused you of having taste when it comes to modified cars, though.

True and I never said I did. As everyone with half a brain knows taste is personal (unless one is a sheep) and it also changes with age. When I was younger and most likely dumber I though manuals were good too. I grew out of it.

Oh just to be clear I'm 25 and have had this car for about 6 years now. I'm looking at and individual throttle body setup. Hopefully I can get 400hp naturally aspirated.

A mate recently bought an ED Falcon track car, with a Barra conversion.
Suprisingly quick.
Watched it at Wakefield Park.a few weeks ago...there were 2 VF Maloos on the track at the same time..the Barra ED lost about 2m to them over the length of the straight.
Suprising.
p.s. they were pre LS3 Maloos.

Mate go for it.
People give me grief all the time over my lc gtr that runs a rb30/25 neo turbo engine and 5 speed box.
I also am currently building my second one that is a lx hatchback torana with the awd driveline from a vy lx8 adventra.

Fully converted front suspension to McPherson struts and commodore crossmember.
Build what you want and not the bean counters and enjoy it rather than worry if you used the correct color on a bolt or clip.
These cars were only original when they left the assembly line and that's all.
As the great man said himself.
Live your dreams.

It’s bound to fit easier than this Barra turbo conversion.

Same. I’d do it also. Seems like a good idea to me.
