Hi all

I am sure this must have been discussed before

Here is my situation.

Motor was recently built. Initial oil was SAE40 to run in for first 1000kms. My oil pressure thus far has been good.

Yesterday after warming up the engine I drained the sump let the oil all trickle out for about 30 minutes. Replaced sump plug and removed filter.

Filled filter with oil and installed. Filled sump with oil and confirmed full.

Started the engine and zero oil pressure. Had it on for a minute at idle and slight rev, switched off to check for any leaks and oil level. all good except no oil pressure.

Did this 3 times, now tappets are loud.

What have I done wrong guys.

I am using 20w50 motor oil now.

I am going to pull the pump out to pack with vaseline today but hell there has to be a easier way.

253/308 can be a bitch with oil pressure if everything is new. I’ve never had issues at oil change though unless it has a loose pickup. Did you use new high tensile screws on the pickup where it screws to the block? The originals were standard grade and stretch. I remember doing some up once when changing the sump and pickup off a VK engine to fit a HQ sump and pickup. The screws did up but felt weird. Undid them and the threads were all stretched, probably would have broken at some stage. Replaced with new high tensile.

I had a similar issue and traced it to air leakage past the pump gears, even though it was brand new and shimmed right. Gave up and switched the pump for the M63 upgrade and haven't had an issue since.

Pickup should be fine, new bolts used there and made sure gasket was in place before bolting.

Also, consider using an oil accumulator - very handy for situations like these.

I had one and only problem, a small welsh plug behind oil pump drive had popped free. Was after engine rebuild on start up

Pump pulled and washed.

Stuffed vaseline in the gears and assembled.

Started up and after about 3 seconds had oil pressure. What a relief!

Going forward I am thinking of doing the following when changing the oil.

1. Drain oil

2. Replace sump plug and fill oil in sump.

3. Start up motor and confirm oil pressure.

4. Switch off motor and remove oil filter

5. Fill oil filter and reinstall

6. Start motor and confirm oil pressure.

In theory will the above work to retain pressure?

I understand that I will be compromising my new oil, but F&%k guys I cannot have zero oil pressure again especially on my newly built motor.

I would normally be changing my oil about every 18 months or so. I used 20w50 mineral oil by Liqui Moly with the oil additive.

I would change it as normal next time. If it does it again, then at least you know you have a problem that needs fixing.

You can always crank it without starting until it makes oil pressure. I do this if I have had cause to change sump/pickup or the engine has been sitting for a long time.

Have had that happen before on a couple if different holdens, not unusual.
Just have to do what you did, pull the pump.
In future pre fill filter as you said, i wouldnt let it drain for 30mins, no need to wait that long.

Something is wrong. I have never heard of this problem through dealership mates.

It would be all over the net and well versed if it were a big problem

It is a problem with the new Ford Rangers. If you don't get oil into them straight away and get it fired up in 30 mins your oil pressure is gone. (This is all over the net)  But a Holden V8 should go at least a couple of months before needing the oil pump primed.

My 5.0L Premier was over a year sitting. I drained the oil, new filter filled with oil, filled it with oil. Put 20L of fresh 98 with UCL in it, put some 98 in a sauce bottle and filled the Holley’s fuel bowl via the breather tube with a tiny dribble down the primaries. It started straight away and had full oil pressure in seconds

NO Z37 is what we use here in SA,

I posted the same on the AussieV8 forum and some of the guys suggested that I should not remove the sump plug and filter at the same time.

once sump is drained fit plug and fill oil then only remove filter and replace with new filter full oil oil.

Thank you all for your responses. Hopefully this will not be an issue next time doing the above.

Ryco specs show the Z30 and Z37 basically the same except slightly longer in length?

Despite the fact GUD/Ryco we call same thing here ... in SA the Z37 is a Z30 here apparently

We used to use Z160's for higher oil pressure... its the injected V8 filter

I have heard this story of no oil pressure after oil change often since the 80s.

Maybe it’s only seen in rebuilt or modified motors?

I’ve  never had it happen in any I have owned.
