Hi All, I understand that engine prefix and date codes have been covered extensively.

My Question is;

Does the engine number provide any indication to year of manufacture? Apart from the prefix. My Holden 6 202 is QL. (which I understand what that part means.)

The date code on the head is 26G8 which I understand is 26th July 1978. If this is correct it corresponds to the build month & year of the car. Which is good for me.

Anyway I have the engine up for sale with build date info. I have been asked for the engine number on several occasions now. These punters have said they need it for date verification??

I am certainly not handing out the engine number until the buyer is buying as I have enough build date info.

Am I on the right track here?

Cheers

Anton 😃

Just give the punters the 1st 3 digits of the engine number and the cast date should keep em happy.

It's a QL so god knows why anyone would be so anal about cast dates etc anyway, unless it is an early QL that could be used to rebirth a JP engine.

Hi Anton , quite a few of the red 6 motors advertised have photos of their engine number,
But as Dave says, the prefix and first couple of numbers and a photo of the cast date by the oil filter should do it,
Good luck with the V8 transfusion

Stop being precious!

How is a buyer supposed to check if it’s stolen or not without the full number?

I agree, you are selling it any way so why on earth would it matter if you advertised the engine number??

Thanks Gents appreciate the replies.

Thinking July 78 is 'not' an early QL??

Just a comment for shits an giggles - Gee its fun trying to sell something on facebook sites/pages. Brings out all the genuine buyers. If I had a dollar for every no show then i wouldn't need to bother with selling the engine  :D

So Wazza are you Torana-less now?

Anton, you said in your original post the cylinder head has a cast date of 26G8.

The cast date of the block, which may not be the same as the cyl head, will be on the side near the oil filter.

The other one is on the other side, just next to the "202".  :joystick:

I much prefer the dual cast date system to the " X " system used on the L34's or the " B " system used on Brock heads as these can be easily copied.....

I'm sure that someone could try to get creative with some bog and a dremel to copy the second date code, probably not very well though. But there's some desperate people out there who'll try anything.

I have seen exactly that on the front of a 308 block.
