G'day fellow enthusiasts,

I have a Brisbane built AUG'72 XU1 in Glacier White that has just been painted and the spray painter has painted the engine bay and blackouts around the car i.e. bobtail and window and sills in Satin Black

I've now have almost completely re-assembled the car as correctly as possible and speaking to a XU1 restorer yesterday he has informed me that the XU1's where actually painted Gloss Black in the engine bay! and all other (lesser) models where painted in the Satin Black..

This is a major and expensive problem now and I would like to get to the bottom of this before I have to dismantle my car again and take it back to the spray painters to fix this expensive stuff up

Has anyone got real information i.e. documents, unrestored survivor's etc.. that may be able to share with me would be greatly appreciated

Thanks heaps

I’m not sure about XU1 but HK was like you say. GTS ands Brougham had gloss Warrigal black engine bays and the rest were slips/slush black. It was gloss off the gun not cut and polished like the exterior, so it does look slightly off-gloss. Can’t say if XU1 was like this or not.

Shouldn’t be that hard to mask up the assembled engine bay and give three coats of gloss over the satin if you wanted. Acrylic would stick well but if it’s urethane you would need to key it with 240 or maybe 400.

Satin black for engine bay. Blackouts for sills etc Adelaide at least gloss black. Maybe someone with a Brisbane built could chime in.

I'm pretty confident my engine bay is unpainted from new (Adelaide) as it looks crappy and I tend to agree with yel327 the finish looks like a gloss BUT off the gun i.e its not satin nor a gloss if that makes sense. I also owned a 71 HG Brougham in the 80's and it was the same. Mine is quite weathered so hard to tell from photos especially with the old camera I'm using. The horn is probably the best photo as still has original sticker on it so if you want I could give it a rub with a wet rag or polish to see what happens?

For an LJ 82911 Warrigal Black gloss off the gun for the engine bay and behind the grille and Warrigal Black gloss for all the body decorative paint outs except for the door division channel (1/4 window frame) which is 04149 med gloss black.

Interesting...

Is that across all, 72-73, Bris - Adel??

I'll stand corrected to my initial comment. But i do prefer the Satin, off gloss look for my bay.

Cheers :)

Yes Jaso, that is the engineering specification for all LJ 82911 built up to the end of September 1973.

I'm yet to see a restored engine bay from a purist point of view that nailed the factory gloss with most opting for the satin

I think that some guys are getting a bit carried away here.

While the Warrigal Black might well be gloss paint, the engine bay is just left "as is - off the gun". It's not buffed or have any clear painted over it.

I've used air dry enamel & it gives a great finish, it just looks "right".

If you finish it in a perfect full gloss it would be a classic case of "over restoration".

The same on the "satin finish", some I've seen are fully matt & just look wrong.

Today's 'gloss off the gun' is probably alot more glossy than it was 50 years ago too

MFM just be careful a genie doesn't pop out of that horn mate...haha! your a legend!

All good gents thanks for the help, Its acrylic gloss off the gun I had a very helpful tip and dug up the information from an old thread (searched - paint and panel - engine bay and code) There is a part colour detail sheet attached if anyone is interested which puts this to bed, proper

Mines going to be extra shiny as its in 2 pack but I'm OCD and wont be able to deal with it being the wrong finish even it is the wrong type of paint! (acrylic is not a long term option in the Top End)

I really appreciate everyone's help, yes an expensive and stressful choice, but Its a path I'm prepared to go down to help ensure the XU1 goes another 49 years

Uppa!  Millsy

It should be mentioned that Acrylic lacquer behaves totally different to 2 Pac so of course the sheen is going to be different . Seems no-one wants to use Acrylic Lacquer these days. I certainly won't be using anything but on my car even though its an inferior product these days thanks to lack of lead.
