Hi all looking at restoring a lc 2dr . Found over in wa , it has no tags , its not a gtr its just a 2dr with 3 on tree , ran a ppsr on the frame number which came back with nothing
The car was going to be put as a speed way car but was rescued and stored away for many years until recently and is up forsale
I rang the licensing department over here and they are saying that it should be good to get licensed once restored
Its has not been reported stolen etc
Has anyone been through something similar
Is there anything im missing beside tags lol
Or is it pretty straight forward

Don't spend too much money on it as its value will be diminished without tags.

That's almost funny saying don't spend too much money when he's talking about doing a restoration. I'm sure that no one has ever done a restoration and then said well that was cheaper than I expected.

It was a hint that it may not be worth the effort.

If its only an S and its the car you really want to have, It shouldn't be a problem with how much you spend or want to do to it.

As long as your happy with it, and are sure that it can be registered without any tags.

Good luck with it.

Cheers

Don’t need tags, only body number or vin. If it happens to be mint body with minimum rust you buy because you may never find a good shell again in your lifetime,

Depends what you pay for it and how much work is needed. Unless you can do everything yourself it costs a bomb today to restore a far from scratch and if you are starting with a car with the least intrinsic value (a car with no tags) you are going to always be behind the 8 ball. And it’s not just what it’s worth to sell, you go investing $50k minimum on a resto and find it’s insured value might be hard to justify. Different story if you are building a tubbed drag car or a Group E replica/tribute as it probably wouldn’t matter much in those cases, even if you whacked any old tags on it.

If it is complete bar tags and you are handy can't go wrong. Where you could fall down is if you have to pay silly prices for glass, panels, interior etc. Mechanical are not such an issue as they don't have to be special numbers.

No prob getting rego without tags in W.A

As above unless you can do most of the work your self

get 50 K ready for a full resto its not an economical task getting these old jiggers back on the road

Just remember we are dead a long time  :)

Turn it into a track car mate, that way -
1 You will spend a shitload
2 The tag issue will vapourise
3 Every time you drive it, your smile will cancel out #1.

Yeah would want to make sure it's a decent repairable project that can one day be re-registered...probably won't find another affordable lc/j copue the way prices are going.

Hey thanks for the replies all .i going to do it .. the body is mint , dont know where it sat but rust repairs are minimum, i do the sheet metal work myself and have done for years so not really worried about that i can get the car cheap and have alot of left over stuff from another 4dr build ive done .. i already have all 2dr glass , seats, grill , head lamp and covers , gtr dash , conversion for disc front 4 pot brakes ,rear lights , bumpers ., 2 complete rust free doors , doors are also mint on it just missing internals . yes ive been collecting for a few years now and have been looking for 2 dr shell that people dont want my left nut for lol. The shell is a complete roller underneath, Basically from what i can see it blew a diff and got parked ,it was then about to be made a speed way car and was rescued and stored . My only concern was licensing here in wa . Hate to invest and not get it on the road , think im gonna go for it If , i will post the in the forum , might need some advise and help along the way, she wont be a faker gtr or fake xu1 it will just be a tuff 2dr . Ive already got a bombed 4 dr and that will go back to stock , then transfer all the goodies over from that once its licensed, lucky i kept everything from the 4dr .
My combo for this will be a bombed 202 with 161 yella terra h comp head, 45 side draft webers , celica 5 speed , true trac lsd3.36

I've seen that too. That's getting a bit crazy. Who knows if they are actually selling for those prices though.

At least you know what you are in for, have most of the gear and can do lots yourself. Plus you aren’t restoring it, you are building up a modified so not having originality isn’t as important.
If it was mine I’d just find some old tags to stick at the front, even if they are sedan tags. Don’t bother with the ADR tag if it’s a 1970-71 build, just don’t have one like a 1969 car. The ADR is the one you really aren’t supposed to touch. Then at least it all looks OK at first glance. I doubt anyone would ever care and if asked just say it’s had a donor nose fitted. As others have said you should be able to register it with just the chassis number, if you get the choice when you do register it select it as a 1969 LC.
