My car is a bit too loud, even the dog thinks it's too loud.

It is an LS1 with small cam, home made 4-2-1 extractors into 2.5" then 100 cell cats a cross over pipe and single mufflers on each side. The mufflers are fairly open as can be seen in the pic below, before I fitted them I thought the oen design meant it could end up pretty loud although the supplier was sure it wouldn't be. When tested during my engineering it was just on the 96 db limit, passed just but I would prefer it was quieter.

To make it quieter without losing too much flow/power am I best off swapping to a different type of muffler to keep it as 1 muffler per side or fitting hot dogs in the system either before or after the mufflers?

I would be interested in losing 3-5 db which is about what the hot dogs claim but if the end result is similar I would be happy to swap to a different type of muffler. Any suggestions? Muffler types or radical ideas?

Cheers, Tom

I’d go for twin hotdogs personally - simplest and cheapest option and should pull it down a few db as you mention.

I run them in mine, before the mufflers.

I should add - if you were over 100db and were looking for a really significant volume drop, then I’d look at different mufflers.

The hot dogs (resonators) are a good idea if it has any bark or drone that needs removing (these will also skew noise readings high). If not and its just loud in general then different mufflers would be a better approach.

Thanks Gents,

It is mostly the idle, drone and low rpm I would prefer quieter. When the noise test was done it was held at about 2500-3000 rpm and the throttle closed rapidly which is when it was recording the highest levels. I will see if I can get it tested again (pending lock down restrictions) and then decide which loud range would be most beneficial to reduce but sounds like hot dogs would work for me.

Thanks again and stay safe

Cheers, Tom

Another vote for hotdogs. Fit as close to the front of the system as possible.

They pulled about 4db out of my LS powered LJ to get it to 96db. I run very similar looking mufflers to those in your pic.

Hot dogs sound like a winner for everyone,

If fitting as close to the front I would guess still after the cats?

I was planning some modifications to the extractors to make more room so it can all happen at the same time

Is it worth spending the extra for what I think is a brand name or just get the eBay versions? About $50 or about $100

I always fit hot dogs after the centre mufflers just to take the bark out of the exhaust. Works a treat and will quieten it that 2-3db you are chasing.

To me, the 100 cell cats would be some of the problem, i reckon 200's would be a bit quieter. I have hookers on both of my ls cars, 100 cell in the cammed ute rather noisy. 200 cell in the factory cammed sedan. A lot more sedate, start there i think. Both of them are offset centre, basically straight through.

Gerry when you had the hot fogs after the mufflers were they mounted up near the tank and visible?

Thanks Gary, that's interesting. My cats are inline not offset and probably should be further forward.

Have to wait till pay day to do some shopping

I fitted hot dogs just after the extractors on my 355. Quietened the Magnaflow mufflers down a fair bit & got rid of the drone. Didn't need cats though. 5f13f2330bcfe4bec6f440ae01704fbb.jpgedc7ce5b64da81befb94a0edc7678e62.jpg

I meant that my mufflers are offset in, centre out. But a straight through design. My cats are cylindrical & straight on the 100's, but factory shape magna flows on the 200's straight design. The 200's shut them up a bit. Both cat sets would be 14" roughly back from the collectors. If the 100's weren't pretty much new, i would replace them with the same 200 cells.

I fit them up in the rear quarter boot wells so they aren't really that visible. Especially if you have painted black lower sills etc like an SLR.. Make sense? I have done it to two of my LH/X's and now my HQ with little turn down pipes off them.

Thanks Guys,

Think I will do both, 200 cell cats and hot dogs

After some reading the 100 cell cats are probably not filtering much at all and considering how much I find other peoples cars too noisy its best I make mine a lot quieter

Could be a few months before I get it done though, hard to fit all that stuff under a Torana
