Is there a trick to removing the rack ends or are they just super tight from the factory?

you need to drill out the locking pin . If you try undoing it with the pin still in you will wreck the threads

5/32 drill does the job.

5/32 drill does the job.

Replacement dowel pin is included with the rack end bush.
