Just striped my UC steering rack as it had play on the LH bush. Got it striped and found the bush was missing! Passed inspection after I converted it to a V8 with no bush.

 

Even more interesting is the car has less than 80 000 KM on it and the pins look to have never been drilled out of the rack ends.

 

Any way in the process of striping it the hardened spacer under the top pinion bearing (Between the bearing and pinion gear) came out in 2 pices. Looks like it was cracked for some time. If anyone has the hardened washer floating around please let me know, even better if you are in adelaide.  If not I will have to get a hardened washer made and  ground to replace it (It is going to affect shimming if it is not the same as original)

Are you talking about the concave/convex washer?...............depending how you look at it..................

Hi

   It is a flat hardened spacer under the top pinion bearing. The inner hole has a rounded edge to clear where to sits on the top of the pinion gear. If I can not get one I will need to find a thrust bearing or possadly a striped pinion bearing and have it surface groung to fit

Ok, that bit.

Sorted.

 

I got 3 1mm washers for thrust bearings of the correct ID and ground the OD to fit, Assembled the rack with a new bush. Shimmed it to give me the correct preload as listed in  the book and all is good
