Update from the fellas I know.

Came into my feed last night.

With the relaxation of the security for indiscretions, they are now giving it the thumbs up.

Apparently one bloke who was stripped of his entry pass was solely for revving the engine while cruising.

No burnout, loss of traction or anything like that.

Apparently he appealed his exclusion after they softened up, but to no avail.

Have been tempted to go for years, but as it seems to just be a skid fest as much as anything, I think I will still pass.

But I guess I could steer clear of the bogans and just look at workmanship.

Maybe one day, when I have something myself that might be worthy of being looked at.

Cheers

Rob

No doubt the excluded bloke is telling his version. Obviously doesn’t line up with the other version/s.

From direct observation the security is very light touch. You have to be a bit of a goose to not be able to resist doing a proper smoke where you shouldn’t.

There was one guy with a rotary doing exhaust pops that were like gunshots and would have taken out a few peoples hearing. He should have been dealt with.

Although there are plenty of skids there is so much more to this event. I find new ideas and the bizarre and unexpected every time. Keeps the creative juices and motivation to finish some of my projects at max.

Not to mention that I saved enough in event discounts at the trade stands to cover my total visit costs with leftovers!

Very mixed messaging at this event.

Gotta finish with a Torana. Makes me want to wrap one of the cars in something outrageous.

So as I left at 3pm Saturday it was typical beautiful Canberra weather with no rain in sight.

It was like a return to SN of old this year. Good thing too. Small skids ok anywhere on Sat. I didn't see any disrespectful patrons beyond the usual "you're a wanker cos you didn't skid" type. No harm done there and the recipients didn't concern themselves with it. I didn't mind when i was accused of driving my wife's car whilst in Braddon with my 500hp AMG. LOL, Torana loving bogans live on. From what I could see no-one disrespected their cars more than the owners themselves.

The complaints about women being harrassed and cars treated poorly by maggotted bogan spectactors can be ignored. They are a thing from Summernats of years passed, but not this year.

On Thursday, there was a short, fat security woman on the cruise route outside Skid Row and she was a frOcking bitch. Power tripping to a ridiculous degree and not having reasonable judgement. She gave me a 'final warning' for some super mild bevahiour which was not out of step with normal Summernats cruise route antics at all. I had those super fat old P Zero Pirellis that were aching for some abuse although I certainly wasn't liberal with the smoke. My mate behind me in TUF-253 (bright green Mk1 Escort) got a 'final warning' at the same time and I don't think he even lost traction... he had his huge slicks on the rear and he treats them very nicely.

Everyone in the entrants group was complaining about that cow. She may have been literally the only staff member causing issues and of course word spread fast. The other staff I encountered all seemed fine.

By the time Saturday arvo came by... holy moly. Main Street was basically devoid of rules. Andy Lopez was there and was all for it. He was the GOAT in the driver's and spectactor's opinion. The security were super cool about everything (cow described above was nowhere to be seen at this time). There were 1,000+ horsepower cars doing 15+ second burnouts, ridiculously high density of ridiculous cars that could not be driven on the road, people everywhere. A lot of energy and it was golden hour after a hot day. Beautiful evening if you don't mind going deaf from open pipes, being asphyxiated by tyre smoke, plus plenty of methanol in the schnoz and eyes for good measure.

The biggest thing that happens which is so damn annoying is hyper-excited spectactors wanting to run out and be right up close yelling in the windows of a car doing a burnout. I don't understand why they feel compelled to do that. It doesn't make the spectacle for the crowd any better, often interrupts the driving, and when the visibility is so bloody compromised, it just increases the risk of things going wrong with traffiic that is of course going both ways. If you really get a hard-on for big burnouts, can you not just enjoy them from like... the side of the road which is like 3m or less away from the car anyway? No mesh, no glass panels, just some intermittent below-waist-height concrete barriers. Not exactly a sterile experience!

For people who liked seeing tyres really getting punished up close, this event was probably the best Summernats ever I would guess.

I kinda went there for the show element thinking that the judging side of things would be enjoyable to try being a part of, and must say I was a bit disappointed with my experience of that.

Also, my car was out of action for a day, it developed a problem that I was too exhausted (from the rush trying to get the car there) to be able to figure out until after dark that night after I gave myself a bit of a siesta.

Overall, it isn't really my kind of event, but I set it as a goal and I'm happy to have reached it, although not exactly in the ideal state (as far as how ready the car was, me being adequately rested and relaxed to enjoy it, etc.) and that was compounded badly by my friend writing his Torana off on the way there in the horrific weather conditions on the highway. So a bit of a mixed set of emotions there, but the event organisers I think have done quite well and I think a lot of people had a really good time.

Good write-up Heath and in the absence of anyone else who was there (except rexy who wants to get up skaps clack) it will have to do to persuade the sooks who claim it as a bad thing. FWIW sorry to hear about your mate. This is where SNs should be, no damage, some skids. Simples.

It was likely the security person Heath mentioned that was the cause of my mate and his friends problems.

These guys arent the run of the mill wannabes in the car scene.

They are actually at what could be described as an elite level.

Although not at the event, my mates Capri named Mincer would be known by those in the car scene quite well.

These guys are the types that get invited to events because of their crowd appeal.

But as said, once they got security on the right page, they all agreed the event was good.

And that they would attend next year as well.

Sometimes the attitude of a single person can upset a lot of people, which seemed to happen on the first day.

Cheers

Rob

I feel sorry for the Valiant owner (a very big dude). A shame the video didn't go longer to see what happened to the clown in the Commodore.........

I had a great time at my first Nats as an entrant!

I've been a few times before as a spectator, first one back in 2006 with @Makka, then a couple with my Car Club where we camped on Tuff St which got pretty rowdy, then even a corporate one in my old job where we stayed in a fancy motel as we 'worked' there for the weekend. It's definitely evolved over the years and become more female and family friendly which I think is a good thing. I'd really love to be able to take my wife and daughters to the event in the future and have them really enjoy themselves.

Security this weekend was definitely more 'lax', I think I know the female security guard that everyone is talking about. She ended up getting stationed over near our camp site on the Friday, by the end of Saturday she was sitting on a deck chair not giving an 'F' what was going on. haha. Must have been told to ease up a bit.

The weather was good and bad, yes it rained, but the cooler temps made everything else better. You could walk around all day and enjoy yourself without getting heatstroke before 10am.

The Patina Torana is mine (Formerly MRLXSS) - I should probably start a new build thread on it! haha.

I also camped on the back side (carpark side), things started to get a little rowdy on the Saturday night, but our camp neighbours all made sure our cars and stuff were out of harms way.

It was great to catch up with a few old forum member mates up there.

@Rexy, thanks for the great photos and commentary! I can agree with you on many of your comments! HAHA

I would certainly like to see a thread on the pros and cons of vinyl wrapping a Torana. I assume the company that did yours was called Render Garage?

Hey Laurie,

Yeah, I'll pull everything together and start a thread on it all. The Render Garage is my business, I started it a couple of years ago and shifted to it full time early last year. I create 3D renders / visualisations of cars and promo/wraps is just part of what we do. The video Col shared shows what we did with the Torana - excuse my amateur video presenting skills! haha

Where I see the best advantages for wrapping a Torana would be on an original car - you could completely protect the original or restored paint underneath (and keep it all 100% original), but then the wrap could be something that you really like. For instance you have an original Antelope SS hatchback with original paint in really good nick. You may have always dreamed of owning an orange one with blackouts... Well you could wrap the car and enjoy having the car you always wanted without actually devaluing it by painting over the original paint. If the time comes to sell, you just remove the wrap and sell your perfectly original Antelope SS - best of both worlds!

When I get a chance, I'll start a new thread on how I did it all!
