Hi,

Has anyone tried clear window tint to reduce heat from the sun?

I have been reading different websites and ads and some claim it works. 3M have a range called Crystalline that they claim works as well as dark tint to reduce heat but I spoke to one of their installers who said it would not give much protection from heat.

There is a window tint company in Castle Hill that has a clear tint the say has similar heat reduction abilities to dark tint, my local window tint guy says clear tints don't work to reduce heat but do help to reduce UV so at least it keeps the sunburn at bay.

Found some reviews in the USA and the clear tints get good results, even found one guy that had his front windscreen done and claims it is great for heat reduction.

Although the clear tints have some colour they are much closer to clear than a dark and I would like to keep the mostly original clear look of my windows.

Anyone tried the clear tint?

Cheers, Tom

Interesting discussion.

Regarding UV protection, I believe laminated windscreens are almost 100% effective... like getting sunburnt through your windscreen is practically a non-issue.

Side glass that's toughened/tempered can still be reasonably effective but the data there seems to vary a lot more.

Against heat, I don't know what differences they have. I have been told that different types of glass for buildings can influence how much heat is transmitted. I've never verified that, although in the case of a car, you don't have many options, anyway.

I know that if you apply a tint with a light colour, it can still make a mega difference. Personally, I like the look of the green tinted glass, like the factory 'Anti-Sun' glass that was offered in the 70's, or the more blueish stuff in the Japanese market. But I don't like the look of conventional grey/black tinted glass on old cars personally.

The clear thing is certainly interesting to hear about. If it's effective, awesome.
