I purchased an LX roller just over 10 years ago. I have little space to work on it, which is why there hasn't been much progress. I had thought of an EV conversion, just to be a bit different. Should I manage to create a "quick release" system for the batteries, I may investigate further. Realistically, I need to buy a place and have a big shed before I start any chassis work. Ideally, that's the next significant step.

Only in America, the land of the kitsch. I prefer the "live" axle concept, with batteries in the engine bay if anything. At least it is real, rather than a mock ICE setup.

The idea is to try and replicate the weight distribution of the original driveline that the car was designed for, so braking, stability, driveability isn’t affected hugely. Imagine if you took a HK sedan, removed the driveline and whacked in a live rear axle with batteries close by. It wasn’t designed to have weight distribution like a 911 Porsche. In any sort of retrofit you’d want the batteries near to the DC motor as the cables tend to be huge.

Yes I agree the cables would be an issue either way. I would think the new axle would be equivalent weight to old plus full tank of fuel? Spare wheel could be relocated forwards also. Unsprung weight would adversely affect handling but more weight rear would reduce understeer.

Cable losses could be reduced by increasing voltage perhaps? I suppose there are inherent safety concerns with that idea.
