Well it has begun!

Today I started sorting bits and pieces for my next project. After selling my Barbados Green LH SL/R 5000 a few years ago I really missed it. So have always been on the look out for another one. Good things come to those who wait....and one came along.

So I have found and brought another LH SL/R 5000, but this one is originally Contessa Gold. So from green to gold! It is nearly 100% complete with just a few bits and pieces missing. And nothing that can't be brought or found fairly easily.

What has been a funny turn of events though, is my Green SL/R 5000 was a Trimatic version. And I always said that If I found another one the odds are that it will be a manual version, which is what I wanted. However this one is ALSO a Trimatic version. With so few made, what are the odds of finding another one?? Still, beggars can't be choosers, so I wasn't going to pass the car up just because it wasn't a manual. With so few SL/R 5000's around these days you can't afford to be to picky!

So I have completely stripped the shell and started disassembling the engine to give it a once over. The body is 99.9% rust free and in great shape so that is the most important thing.

I missed the memo, and figured because you were asking about warming up your SL/R 5000 motor, you still owned the Barbados car.

Congratulations and welcome back to the club!

Are you just going to put a manual in it anyway? How ridgy didge will it be otherwise?

Did it look like this when you picked it up? Or was it a more complete car?

No...I think I will keep it Automatic. That way its original, plus I don't mind automatics. Also here in NZ, if you change a vehicle from its standard configuration then the changes have to be certified. So keeping it as an auto saves a lot of hassle, paper-work and money!

This car will be ridgey didge as all its parts are there. I have had the pleasure of mostly taking the car to the state it is in now.  ...... :D

Yeah!...I always said the next one I get would be a manual  AND I'd put flares on it.... But now that I find another SL/R, and its flareless I won't cut it up to add any. But I wouldn't have minded if there were some already there.

Nice, keep the updates coming. Looks like you have red deer living in your roof. Should probably look into that.

Just a few more pictures from the last couple of days....

I have stripped the inside and given it a coat of underseal before I put in the Dynamat.

The K member is out... So is the diff.

Now to continue stripping the old paint and primer off and refurbishing the running gear.

I see it has those same horrible NZ welds on top of the chassis rails. Once you get the whole engine bay wire wheeled and a light coat of primer on, take some more pics of the engine bay so I can compare spot welds with the Aussie bodies.

Well its been a productive couple of days. I stripped back the drivers door, the bonnet and the fuel tank. Plus I stripped the K Frame... But I dropped that off at the sandblasters!

At least stick a manual in it, it will be waaaaay more fun to drive.

If you stick to the Holden M20 4 speed you wont have to get a cert for it, nobody will know it didn't come like that from the factory.

Depending on what products have been put on earlier... that job of stripping the wheel arches out can be the least enjoyable out of any job on a car build IMO.

You're off to a great start.

I can tell you what products they used...... Some sort of titanium/concrete mix coated with under seal and 50 years of dirt that you just about needed a jack hammer to get off!!!....  :D

But I got there in the end!

Often used bitumen based shutz. Spray on some kerosene. Wait 5 minutes and comes off easy.

Cheers. I used that in combination with a heat gun and scraper!

It was a good day today. Got all the stone coat undersealing done and the fuel tank put back in.

I also refurbished the tail lights, but forgot to take photos. And also started playing with the headlights. It has been a bugger finding 2 good original headlights. And from my memory of my last LH the lights were not great. So i brought a couple of new 7" x 5" lights able to take H4 bulbs, so I can get some decent lights. Now the ones I got are the right dimensions, however they do not accept the stainless retainer ring. But my thinking is that this is not even needed. I plan to just drill 2 small holes in the top and bottom and use 2 small bolts to fix the headlight housings into the buckets. And these will not even be seen. I only have to cut a bit out of the bucket to make room for the park light.

It wasn't on all early LH Torana's???

From what it says in the LH Parts manual, it indicates it was available for 8UG, 8UH and the 5ltr
