cheers. Anyone know if the M21 box will fit onto an 304 block? think the 304 will be chev pattern, guessing will need a different bell housing. doing this to save the original motor. cheers

Gene, huh? 304's are definitely all Turbo/Chev pattern.

The question is "Can you put an M20/M21 behind a turbo/chev pattern block?" right?

Maybe with an adaptor plate, a re-drilled bellhousing, or if you can re-drill the block? I don't know what options are most practical.

If you throw a Falcon T5 in there or whatever you can just use a Dellows bellhousing that'll suit that. I have a 304 in mine but didn't keep the Aussie four speed so never had to answer that question.

If you are using the Aussie 4 speed you might as well use the original engine cos its going to have to be a stock/mild combo for that gearbox to survive.

My sincere apologies. When I see "304" I just think EFI motors or VL stuff (which I assume is all Chev pattern) but I didn't realise they changed the displacement back in VK.

Definitely my bad!

The change came with the introduction of Group A. The reduction to 304CI put it below the 5 litre threshold which allowed the VK to race at a lighter weight...........something I would have thought you would know all about. :)

I angst over removing my original engine and replacing it with something else just in case I damage it, but then I came to my senses and realized life is far too short to delay gratification (I'm 60) so I left it in and try to use restraint on the right pedal past 5000rpm. Don't save the original engine for some other person to enjoy. Bring her back to nice and original and you enjoy it while you can as we never know what health surprises tomorrow brings.

As above. Unless you're spinning it to the moon repeatedly in competition with highly strung components not designed for longevity, the argument for just hotting up the existing motor is a pretty strong one IMO.

Out of interest Blair, your body number is 453268M and mine is 453229M. So they were only 39 cars from each other down the production line. I wonder how far apart that would have been in time??

Could easily have been the same or the next day, and, as GMH did not produce the cars in sequential number order, it is possible they may have physically been a lot closer to each other on the production line than 39 cars but we will never know. They will have been on the same ship over the ditch.

And don't forget that HJ Holden body numbers were in that mix too.  Maybe HQ actually. 453268 is around the changeover.
