Hi all,

Has anyone had issues fitting the Mackay front engine mount, A1156.🤔

I bought a new pair to fit my LJ, but the lower main bolt on the left side, wont fit through the lower mount hole on X-member completely, as though it needs to be half a hole lower?

I can start the bolt from the front, the mount sits a bit cocked, even flogged the mount with a hammer, but NOPE, no joy.

The Mackay catalogue, lists tbe A1156 P/N for LJ.

Ive contacted my parts supplier, in hope of a resolution.

I didnt want to take to it with a die grinder.

Cheers 🙂

Jaso

Mackay A1156 are the correct mounts for all Holden 6-cyls from HK to VK including Toranas, there must be an underlying issue.

The mount is quite small & symmetrical, any manufacturing defect would be obvious, maybe there is a problem with the bracket to the engine block or the angle of the engine itself.

Pics would be good.

Ok, here are some measures of the mount to begin with.

I am still yet to get back to shed to measure mounting point on car. And the existing mount already fitted?

I also wrote direct to Mackay asking for their measurement specs, awaiting reply.

Update, manufacturer Mackay have replied with an image of their product (attached) and their hole measurement. Which my measures are close to.

Mackay quoted,
"Our stock measures 15.5 – 15.8
The hole on our stock is 12.4 – 12.5"

My parts supplier, has jumped at refunding the full purchase price and also indicated not to bother returning the mounts, to dispose of as i wish.

I'm still yet to measure the car. 👀

What if you leave the two bolts loose that attach the engine mount to the engine bracket? Will that allow the mount to line up so the main bolt will slide through?

Good question Dave...
I will revsit this issue on the weekend.

But from my limited memory of what I tried on the weekend (probably in haste), when fitting the SUS mount, i didnt have it bolted to the engine, when i was attempting to adjust its recalcitrant attitude with my hammer.

Maybe i was having a bad hair day?

Reckon Dave may be on to it.

I  v a g u e l y  remember something similar, not with a new McKay, but just when refitting engine.

OK then, have you tried swapping the mounts over to see if the issue remains on the left side or if it moves to the right side with the mount?

I recall an issue like this myself from my very younger days.

Have you got the mounts on the right way to the brackets that come off the engine?

The mount on one side goes to the rear of the bracket on the engine and the other side goes to the front.

Cant remember which side goes where, but I scratched my head for a while with a similar problem until my mechanic mate laughed at me and told me how to fix it.

Cheers

Rob

Yep,
The (old) mounts are on correct front/rear sides of the block brackets.

More to follow on weekend when I have time.

:) Cheers all.

Update, just focusing left side, and comparing the mounts side by side.(new mount pictured with its bag for I.D.)

The unidentified existing engine mount fitted to my car, has 3-4mm more room underside to fit the Kframe without issue.

The Kframe top surface of weldmet measures approx. 16.5mm to hole centre.

The new Mackay 1156 mount sitting on the Kframe clearly shows a hole centre issue, which when i attempted to fit last weekend, i got the bolt through one side, mount cocked, but bolt would not go through otherside.
It also appears as heavier in construction too looking at the thickness of metal used,
The "T" bracket also sits way closer to the top of mount plate too.

Has anyone got a comparison measurement of Kframe weldmet hole centre?

See below various progress pics,

Cheers

Jaso :)

The mount on the right (the one that fits perfectly?) looks to be older stock. The mount you are trying to fit to the left hand side of the engine is clearly not dimensionally correct.

Probably now made in China? Either attack the oval hole in the mount with a die grinder or go back and see if you can get a mount that will fit correctly.

Thanks Dave...

I am going to feed the above homework back to Mackay too..

My next question also is,

Does the engine mount have to sit directly ontop of the K Frame weldmet, without any clearance underside?

Looking at the way my EH mounts sit, they are directly ontop touching the K frame without any underside clearance.

Below pictures is the RH side mount fitted to my Torana.

Can't say I have ever taken much notice if there is clearance or not. I assumed the underside of the mount would make contact with the k-frame weldmet (1st time I've heard it called by this name).

Jaso, just checked my mounts. Yep they both sit down against the weldmet. Well actually there is a 10thou clearance in the middle but the corners sit tight.

Looks like both your new mounts are incorrect, just in different ways.

This Pic is of the original fitted mount, that did not pose an issue.

But yes, As Dave suggested earlier, Die grind the lower section of hole in Mackay 1156, so my bolt will go through..

The Mackay mounts turned out to be freebies, after my parts supplier refunded my $$

Thanks all, for your feedback :)

Jaso.

Have you got a set of 73 engine mount to block brackets to swap over to. I'm not sure what date these were introduced but I'd think that a 4/73 car should have them, I'm sure that someone will be able to clarify this.
