I'm probably the last to know, but for those that don't ,there's an interesting XU1 restoration blog on U tube ATM on a Brisbane Lone O' Ranger all matching XU1, by a father and son team called 'Big Truck Parts Australia at Gatton (Qld). Not sure how many cars they have restored but they recently completed the body work on a VH Commodore and had 21 episodes documenting the restoration. What impressed me was the file finish (no body filler).

The XU1 will be interesting to follow. Already three episodes.

So they use lead filler? Some body seams need filler surely?

I had visions of building Sallys GTR without bog and using lead and a file. That didn't last long!

Way beyond my skill level.

Sounds like they will lead fill joins that were originally lead filled. That XU1 left the Acacia Ridge VAP with a black vinyl roof.

Matthew O. I know the owner, he used to be my neighbour across the road from our family home in the 1980's.

All those years of seeing our Torana's must have made a lasting impression on him. LOL

Dave I think there is a prelude to episode 1 where the owner and the panel beater meet and do a walk around the car then go for a drive. I don't think they are using lead. The VH Commodore blog, they just use a dolly/hammer and file (and bucket loads of patience and skill ). The finished car looks fantastic. I am eager to know how much they quoted on the XU1. If the VH is anything to go by, this XU1 will end up being bloody perfect.

Mark, see post #3 above. Marty has posted the Youtube link to the introduction.

There are panel joins in the LC & LJ's that must be filled, either lead wiped (as was done in the assembly plants) or plastic filled (bog). It is impossible to file finish in metal those joins.

Edit: Lead wiping is metal and it is file finished.

It looks like it was bogged up and painted for a quick flip.
I'd be concerned about what else lies hidden under the paint. Regardless, it looks like its getting fixed properly now.
A lot of work ahead.

Wouldn't be to many restored XU1's out there that didn't have similar issues hidden under nice shiny paint. That father and son team seem to take the time to repair cars properly. I'd be interested in what they are charging/quoted to restore that one.

In the very first intro episode the owner said he wanted to bring it in for a tidy up and to straighten gaps etc..... I wonder if he's shocked at what's been uncovered.... I know I'd be tempted to track down who did those repairs!
