i think you will find the correct measurement is 5/8" centre to centre.

1" (one) would be dangerously unsafe as there isnt enough meat left to safely support the bolts and arm.

So it sounds like 5/8...

The silence is deafening... So does anybody else want to comment about this?

The correct distance is 5/8" according to limos measurements.

11/16" (17mm)but no further as theres not enough metal to support the bolts.

got the XU1 front end out today, interesting
there are two sets of holes in it for upper mounts,
one standard, one lower down and the $64 question, how far down
5/8" looks to be the go
there is very little metal in front of front hole, less than 5mm

Irrespective...the lower you can go...the better the improvement. Read M@s thread on same in LH/ suspension settings. But each to his own. I went down 1" and still had plenty of metal left, we are almost getting down to were rear exhaust hangers painted or gal dipped. Move forward guys..do it at the measurement you are comfortable with and reap the handling benefits. .

With this mod, does one still adjust the control rod the same as standard( i.e I think 25mm of thread exposed out of the rear nut)? I am aiming for about 5 deg positive castor.

If you do lower the control arms does it require more or less shims?

i think when you get a wheel algnment they will work that out, as you should get one after the mod i would think.

Last time I ended up doing most of the wheel alignment myself,as nobody around my way wanted to change shims on a v8 lc.I got it pretty close & the the wheel alignment guy finished it off.

Took me about a day to get it close.PITA of a job with the v8 in there.

When I had the front end out of my LC to rebuild and re-bush it, I was under the assumption that 1" was the correct measurement centre to centre so I marked it up and put the base of the drill bit where the hole was to be drilled to see how it looked. I had the Fiv book right there next to me to use the diagram but there are no measurements on it. Its definitely not 1" as there is no meat left and you end up with what jklumpp has done to his. His looks like its measured correctly as thats what mine would have looked like had I done it. No knowing exactly what the measurement was, I didn't do it at all. I would say limo's measurement of 5/8" is the one to go off as when I worked out it wasn't 1", it looked like about 5/8" would be right. 1" is psycho, you are asking for trouble, especially with a V8.

So 5/8" should be fine without add extra metal there?

5/8" seems to be the actual XU-1 measurement. I wouldn't go much further than that.

still no problems with mine....except for the clutch rat trap fouling the top wishbone.... but some handy work with the grinder fixed that!
Wheel alignment was no drama to get the desired settings, and car drives & handles beautifully on the road & track.....

I do agree however that all information that has come to light seems to suggest that 5/8" is the correct XU-1 measurement.....just a shame more people weren't forthcoming with that info when i did the mod....

As I said though, when I went to do mine, it was obvious that 1" was was too far down. As long as it worked for you and you are happy with the safety of your car then its all good. Probably the further down you can get it, the better its going to handle anyway and its not like you are doing it to replicate an XU-1 exactly.

The suspension on the XU1 differs in that the mounting for the upper control arm is lowered on the crossmember. I don’t have the actual measurement but you are probably correct in calling it an inch.

There are two sets of bolt holes which indicate that the lower one was drilled somewhere along the production line.

The 1970 service bulletin notes as important the the upper control arm is always reinstalled in the lower mounting position.

I would confidently assume that it was for handling purposes.

From what I have read this mod can be carried out on any LC/LJ Torana
but I would check on that before you pull out the old Black and Decker and start drilling a few holes.

This was disccussed sometime ago on this BB with some pretty good and informantive information. Perhaps someone with Search capabilities could locate it and post a link.

mounting the upper wishbone 1” lower will also give it a higher roll
center thus giving the car less body roll in the front.
and this i would say is the reasoning behined the revised mounting
position
