here goes, today i started my ck engine with a set of 150 cds dated 128a 128b 128a spent all week cleaning them and another set, the first set with the 128 stamped into them, where date coded just the same as yours the second set was date coded 7-11 with the 1 in the middle, so i put the second set of carbys on thinking these where the right codes for my car, set the seats up just like the ones you have in pic,,, start car runs for a second or 2 then dies,, look in throt, piston is jammed, ply piston away from seat with great force and needle is stuck in seat, pull carbys off,, scratch head for about 2 hours, then go back to parts wash tank to find 3 2mm thick brace washers, but i already had the washers you have in your pic in place, put these brace washers on and try again she runs a treat, then i look on the front of these carbys to find the numbers 236,,, so are these carbys the race batch of 71 bathurst carbys or are thay just another ring in???? that is the reason for all the questions, mabe we need aldo to come in on this before i go useing the 70 date coded ones, is there any carby gurus out there tuned in on this thread, that knows what there talking about, by the way the carby tags i have are riginal 3257 with a big a anb b stamped into them.
thanks heaps for your help.
cheers gong

The most common reason a needle becomes jammed in the jet is because the jet hasn't been centered after assembly. The soft aluminium washer you speak of is a sealing washer and has no bearing on the fuel mixture adjustment.
As for the Carbs numbered 236

ps mate that alloy washer would still act as a spacer, as the farer away the seat the deeper the needle will need to travel before it shuts the fuel supply off, this is the problem i was haveing before i put these 3 times 2mm brace washers back in the seats[fuel was stopping]

yeh i know, but if you take the seat out and drop a 6e needle down it stops when it hits the bottem, but if you try this with the 5h needle it stops about 10mm short, as this needle is thicker than the 6e,,,, as to the 236 carbys it was the date code of 7,8,9,10 month of 71 that got me more than the 236.

Stromberg Metering Needle Specs (diameter) measured at 1/8" intervals from the shoulder (underside of shank).
Measurements are imperial not metric.
5H
1 .0880
2 .0844
3 .0798
4 .0787
5 .0769
6 .0747
7 .0727
8 .0707
9 .0693
10 .0670
11 .0656
12 .0635
13 .0635
6E
1 .0880
2 .0838
3 .0810
4 .0786
5 .0763
6 .0739
7 .0710
8 .0689
9 .0668
10 .0649
11 .0631
12 .0612
13 .0566
As you can see there is bugger all difference in the diameter of the needles.
Remember the jet has a .090" orifice and the thickest part of the needle is .0880". That leaves .002" clearance on both needles.
Both of the above needles use .090" jets so both needles should insert all the way into the jet until the shoulder bottoms out.
You will note the measurement at the shoulder of both needles is the same.
As I said before the aluminium washer has nothing to do with the fuel mixture (jet) adjustment. That job is all taken care of by the jet adjusting screw.
If your 5H needles jam in the jet at about 10mm from the shoulder I would suggest your needles might be bent.
Find a smooth flat piece of glass and roll them across it to see if they are straight or bent.
Cheers
Dave.
