Hi Paul,
The cable boots can only go on from the threaded rod end of the cables.
If they are the original 40 something year old boots from your car then I'm not surprised they have split this Popsicle stand of a joint.
If they are new Repro boots then take them back to whence you procured them and complain that you used two whole tubes of KY and they were still too tight to fit over your rod.

Tightly wrap the thread with sticky tape and form a wick at the end with the tape.
Some rubber grease or some pump pack handwash to lubricate the tape, feed the nipple on the rubber boot over the tape wick and work the nipple fully onto the end of the rod.
Now the nipple on the boot should slide down the tape, over the square crimped part of the steel rod and down onto the cable.

Lube used from memory.
I then proceeded to tear me using a screw driver while putt Ng it in the body.......ffs

Successfully managed to get both on without splitting this time,The sticky tape and dishwashing liquid worked cheers Dave.

Rubber grease was my best friend for stuff like that, incredible how much you can stretch a small orrafice with this lube.
