Hey guys, after having no luck finding a good set of Flares for my Gemini coupe im thinking of making a set for myself from scratch...
Ive had a look around the net and there seems to be a fair bit of info on making to mould of a item... but now on how to make the actuall "prototype" or "plug" itself???
What would be the best material to use? Wood? Clay? some sort of Foam?
If anyone knew of any links showing some of the process's thatd be great
This is what I want the flares to look like pretty much.

the way it used to be done was packing tape was used to cover panel to prevent damage, then foam sheet was glued on and sanded into shape, after that fibreglass was applied and bog as necessary to final finish. Then you applied a release agent followed by gel coat then start layering your fibreglass over the top for mould. After it cured you you simply pulled the mould off and if it broke the plug so be it.
Hope this helps it was 25 years ago when I used to help a mate make kits and the memory might not be a s good as it was.

to stop the fibreglass from breaking or warping, use some timber to reinforce the mould.

As far as making your plug you can use whatever really you best bet thou is foam as its easy to sand and shape. Use polyeurthane foam as its cheap and fibreglass resin wont melt it. Polystyrene foam is the white stuff you get when you buy a new tv, its no good as resins will melt it. once you have shaped your foam put couple layers of fibreglass over it let that go off then fill n fair it with car bog.

I think what you need to do is buy a set of flares and then modify them to suit. When your thinking of doing something like this maybe you need to find a set of flares from another model or brand of car that may look like what you want and then work on fitting and modifying them. What I would do is log onto fibreglass company websites have a look at different styles and then find something close and then spend the time to make them fit. Modifying fibrelass is easy and you can do anything with it. Good luck

Cheers for the tips guys, I ended up finding some "universal" flares in America which were cheaper then some of the local ones including post... was amazing how well they fit as well!
