Gearbox Rebuild Times

Had to get my gearbox rebuilt, was jumping out of 3rd.
What sort of labour would be fair to rebuild a M20? Fitted a 2nd hand 3rd gear, all brgs & seals were new as it was previously done & had only travelled 100ks. Gear box was already out of the car.
Cheers.

If you were doing them all the time then yeah, 2 hours would be doable, otherwise I could see it taking a little while longer... although 6½ hours is pushing it out there.
Remember you have to disassemble the entire mainshaft to replace third gear, and then there's repacking all those individual bloody needle rollers!
A lot of guys charge whatever the book says too, regardless of how long it actually took.

An experienced transmission repairer should be able to do that repair in 2 hours considering he doesn't need to clean anything or remove the counter gear from the box.
Remove one circlip, remove the 4th & 3rd synchronizer hub and the 3rd gear and synchro ring are off. No need to disassemble the complete mainshaft, which saves a bucket load of time.
Agree, probably charged a set price for labour based on normal rebuild times.

I'll tackle him.
He had to do a warranty job replacing the rear main & getting the crank ground too, I feel he's trying to dip into my pocket for a few hrs to ease his pain a little.
We shall see how we go.

Another incompetent tradesman nothing hard about rebuilding a M 20He was hunting for the cause of 3rd gear jumping out, but I reckon you would've looked at every part 10 times over in that time.

Slipping out of gear is normally going to be worn dog teeth on the gear and/or a worn selector hub sleeve or broken/weak selector hub key retention springs, worn selector detent levers inside the side cover or incorrectly adjusted gearshift selector rods external to the transmission.
Shouldn't take 4.5hrs to diagnose the root cause of the problem.
