hi was just wondering wats the best oil to be running in my worked 308 its no freashly rebilt so should it be thicker

as makka suggested 20W/50 should be fine if you are running typical 80-90C water temperatures at cruise in the heat. If it runs hotter consider using a heavier oil such as 25W/60, but this would be too thick for winter.

The New Castrol Edge 20W50 is what I use...The lC V8 loves it...some wanker Perkins said to me it was ok...What does he know?

i'm with Rory, my 308 gets the edge, except I think its actually 25W50 not 20 but you'll see it easy, they only make 4 different types in the edge range.

i wish they would go back to simple oil ratings instead of the whole 2 lots of numbers thing. I am currently having problems with oil presure at higher temps, im runnning 20w50 but i am looking at stepping up to a higher viscosity oil, with a higher performance band so as im not losing my oil pressure when my girl gets hot.

Oil pressure will drop as it gets hotter, you cant prevent that(just a sign that the oil is running more freely)......but the important question is how low is it dropping in your car? If you are running engine coolant temp at 80-90C(if you know your oil temp that makes it easier), 50 grade oil should be about right for summer on the highway and if it is not there is possibly a problem somewhere. However, if you can rectify it just by pointing heavier oil in it........go with that
Its the second number that you should be most interested in if you feel the oil is getting too thin for your engine at high temperature. Change to a 25W/60 grade, that will be your cheapest alternative......if that doesnt work....you have problems...but there are even heavier 40W/70 oils available.

No problems anywhere else devils, just the oil as it begins to heat up loses its "viscosity" and therefore my oil pressure drops. My step dad used to run toranas, HRs and any old holdens as spedway cars, and he did it for years as well as being well known for knowing tricks to making things go quite well. He always ran a thicker oil then 20w50 and had no troubles, hence the reason why i said i was thinking of going to a heavier oil, and the simpler system was when it was simply 50 weight oil rather then the 25w/60 and 20w/50 and alike, no i wasnt around then but my old man talks in those terms and it seems alot easier. oils these days seem to be hell of a lot more complicated, as you have synthetic VS natural oils, different additives and each oil brand claiming to do something the next cant do. i use penzoil, as it is what we use in the sprintcar (mind you a heavier oil) and we get it discounted.

you can still get straight 50 weight oil, its just there is no point in a daily type car.

What sort of drop in oil pressure are we talking about?
Interesting that a 50sae grade oil is still available, though its not going to improve your situation more than a 20W/50 oil.

What are peoples views on the Castrol Edge Sport 10W-60 for mildly modified through to club race spec 308's in comparison to the Edge Sport 25W-50. Would 10-60w be too light for most 308s?
I bought some Edge 10w-60 as it was a synthetic oil compared to the mineral 25w-50 and I do the odd club race days on the track. But there wasn't a lot of science in my thinking and I'm now thinking that the 25-50w would have been a better choice? I've got a few 308 powered cars so am wanting to choose one oil to use in the three of them
Any thoughts on what would be best? Thanks
