gday all

the fan on the 253 in the lh is a bit of a weird looking thing as it sits high up very high infact above the radiator top (talk about dangerous!!!)

so im tempted to install a thermo fan to be safe aslo to reduce the risk of a fan blade through the hood

what size thermo fan/s would people recomend for a stocko 253 with a 2barell carby

Perhaps get hold of an original fan guard that bolts to the hood latch/support panel.......a 2min fix....and cheaper.

Install the original fan guard and stick with the original fan or a thermo clutch fan. The mechanical fan moves more air than a electric thermo fan and will never blow a fuse or have a faulty thermostat.

You can expect to pay around $300 - $400 for a thermo fan setup. If you do decide to go thermo then the Ford Mondeo or AU falcon fans are the best setup.

Over the last 16 years I have had twin Craig Davis fans without shrouds, twin Craig Davis fans with shrouds and currently have Ford Mondeo fans on a aluminium radiator as the Ford AU fans would not clear my Air Cond.

What can you buy for $150?

The $300-$400 was for new AU Falcon or Mondeo fans, relays, thermostat and wiring.

$150 gets you 2 supercrap 10" no thermostat. Good for the stockcars.

There are plenty of offerings for new au fans on ebay for not much and second hand for not much too.
Do consider that the new cheaper ones are probably not the genuine Ford article(Bosch motors etc) and may not be as good...........something that only lasts 2 years may not be so cheap afterall..........however, the aftermarket article maybe just as good.............who has had some of the aftermarket ones longer than 3 years?

my bad

$145 gets you a set of AU thermo's from the wreckers, $5 get you 2 relays from jaycar, another $5 for 2 blade fuse holders and fuses and around $40 for a temp sender and chuck in another $5 for some wire, there is $200 well spent

Also factor in the cost of an alternator that can provide an output at idle that wont flatten your battery if you need the fans a lot at low speed. The current Bosch catologue doesnt show the alternator that comes with an AU, but guessing it would be at least 55/100A rating......thats 55A at idle 120A at 2000 engine rpm.
Chances are though if this was fitted to a car without engine management it would be very annoying when the fans kick in as it would require having a much higher than necessary idle speed to stop the motor dying when the fans kick in. The AU fans put an ~2hp load on the motor......if the alternator is up to it.

Use a fan & shroud if you want to keep it simple,no fuss or go the au fans if you have a bigger alternator like one off a v8 efi engine or bigger, the au fans work just as well if not better. All depends on what you prefer.
