Just wondering if my engine is an original for the car, if it's possible to tell from the engine no.. It's a red 202 in a LX 4dr.. ENG NO. HD61539.. Does the HD mean anything?? I'm just trying to get an education on these sorts of things... sorry if it sounds like a stupid question...

Julz.

Hi

It seems to be motor as fitted to an LH or early LX Torana

2850 high comp engine, 2.838lt, 1974-1976, 78 kilowatts, HD prefix

The high comp 2850 used the "HD" prefix up to and including the UC. The numeric part of the number can give a rough idea of the engine but the casting mark that looks like this "11F6" is the casting date, "11" is the day, F is June (A is Jan, B is Feb etc I is skipped) and "6" is the last digit of the year.

All Toranas from the LH to the UC used "H" as the first letter of the engine prefix where the HQ to early HZ used "Q".

Therefore a 308 in a Torana was "HT" and in a HQ it was "QT" and a Statesman was "11QT".

The "HD" is important if your looking for an original engine but otherwise the engines are pretty much the same regardless of engine number prefix.

If this is the 202 in the racecar it came from Matts Orange Hatch originally. (253SSTorana)

Hi Guys.

Most of this has been answered, it is a 173 (2850) hi-comp red block, originally fitted to an LH to UC Torana. The exception is from July '76 (ADR27A) onwards HDxxxxx is used for engines with manual trans only, the engines with auto trans become XQDxxxxx.

With the number HD61539, this places it in early LX production, probably around April /May '76. Have a look at the casting date, located near the oil filter.

Dr Terry.
