Yes is a basic answer.
Find the firing order on the manifold.
Identify which cylinder is which off the manifold.
Find No 1 at the dissy.
Work clockwise according to the firing order from there.

You can put them back in any order you like............as long as the right lead on the dizzy goes to the right spark plug
Given your question, Im anticipating perhaps you may have trouble finding no1 terminal on the dizzy cap? Ive seen it written on some, but dont know about the cap you have. To find no1, remove the dizzy cap and on the metal lip of the distributor body there should be a notch, no. 1 spark plug is attached to the closest terminal from this.
You removed the dizzy too.......and replaced it with a MSD one?, did you have some method to make sure you replaced it in the correct orientation too?
Do the v8 cylinder nos just go in order as you go from front to back of the motor? Cylinder no1 closest to front, no2 on other side slightly further from front etc?

Do you mean the locating lug for the cap? , no, it should be just a small line/notch across the 2mm lip of the dist body, that looks like its been done with a sharp screwdriver.

Devil's suggestion for finding #1 is very limited and unfortunately not applicable in many cases for various reasons. Watch #1 inlet valve as you turn the motor over slowly(can usually be seen through filler cap hole), once it closes watch for the timing mark to reach Top Dead Center, when it does the rotor button will be pointing to #1. Relplace leads clockwise from #1 in the order above.

Fair go Doc, you could have found a way of giving your great information without denigrating me.
My method should be fine for a stock dizzy that has been installed properly.
I did qualify my response by asking if a new dizzy had been fitted and what measures had been taken to ensure that the dizzy/rotor orientation hadnt been upset.
If there was a response that the dizzy was simply removed and fitted in any orientation, then yes I would have offered a technique to find no.1....different to yours(do you really think our enquirer would know the difference between an inlet and exhaust valve from the top?.....but didnt throw that up first as judging by the 1st question of the enquiry, I wanted to keep it simple.
I have only a certain level of experience in looking at the orientation of dizzies on different cars, however, everyone Ive ever seen fitted to any car with a running motor has been installed correctly, if people have to go to the extent of your technique to get the car running......then they get the lining up the notch mark(given there is one there) right too and typically their hand if forced in order to get the leads to actually be able to connect if the leads are strictly tailored to each position.

Mate. I didn't mean to denigrate you, didn't say you were wrong, but your method is limited where as the alternative is universal and not that difficult. I was going to add that if it just backfires and carries on that he watched the wrong valve and is 180 out, but I was waiting for a response first. I'm not into typing much so I don't tend to beat around the bush, but genuinely sorry if I did offend.
