I had a Grand Cherokee in the last model,
and if you were smart, the standard Jeep service
contract could be built in to the lease.

My services, even the bad ones were only about $200.00

I know most people hate 'em, but I have to say I really miss it!!
Great car and super reliable. Never missed a beat in 200K km's.

The new ones must be a little more spethul....

The word "jeep" supposedly came from the name of the character "Eugene the Jeep," introduced in the Popeye comic strip in 1936. The association of "jeep" with the small four-wheel drive vehicle, however, wasn't made until a few years later. The Army designated these sturdy little trucks "General Purpose," or "G.P." for short. To soldiers raised on Popeye, the transformation of "G.P." into "jeep" was inevitable, and so pervasive that the Willys-Overland Motor Company trademarked the name "Jeep" in 1940.

Isn't the internet wonderful!

Paying more for a service than a reasonable torry would cost.....eh!

I had a Jeep Cherokee and sold it about 2 years ago.
Apart from a 96 Mitsubishi Magna I owned, it would have to my worst car ever.

My dad (an old digger) says JEEP stood for just enough essential parts - that was back in the days when they were a bare body with wheels, mechanicals and a machine gun.

What is the "X" trail's towing capacity? Does anyone know? How does that compare to Jeep? I am looking at another 4X4 for towing.

I was looking at buying a Jeep Grand Cherokee a while back as the new diesels have a very good write up. 9.5 lts per 100kms and 3 ton towing capacity. And they reckon It'll beat the V8 Grand Cherokee off the lights. Didn't get to the stage of finding out about servicing prices etc, as I ended up buying a Turbo Diesel Hilux instead. Good choice by the sounds of it. Although Toyota servicings not exactly cheap, still not bad compared to Jeep by the sound of it.

Your right. The origin of "Jeep" was a quaint fantasy animal which accompanied Popeye. There is also the theory of "GP" painted onto the test vehicles. It might have been called the 5-cwt, but fate stepped in and we now have the jeep we know so well!

Yeah my olds have an xtrail, and it is the best car they have ever owned. It pulls like a 6cyl. Looks good and has lots of awesome stuff! It tows exceptionally well. You wouldnt even know you are pulling a trailer most of the time.

But we did tow a big trailer to Dubbo for Xmas and it did che the fuel rather quickly. Only about 300kays a tank i think (55litres)

But if it is short trips around the city it tows fantastic, brakes well and is alround a very good car!

A Jeep... thats another story

Matt those economy figures aren't bad (considering how much work a 2.6 is required to do with that kinda load); I'm impressed. Yeah, great vehicles, I've driven a few and I love them.

dad wanted a jeep, drove a cherokee and found there was NO head room, so he bought a Land rover discovery.

petrol V8 with a good note,
leather
permanent 4WD
and a 4500kg towing capacity.

what more could you want,

(shit fuel economy tho)
